Brooks spoke en "Weman In Pelltlca" at the meeting held en Tuesday after noon under the auspices of the League Uncommon Sense : The Real Luxury Tax By JOHN BLAKE THE United States Government has remitted the 10 per cent tax en lux uries of which most people bitterly complained. Yeu no longer have te nay an extra quarter If you are foolish or hungry enough te ent feed that costs you $2.0(1 for the amount served at a single meal. Yeu no longer need add 10 per cent te the cost of a mereexpenslve over coat than you really need. IF YOU have been what Is called a "spender." some of the needless .things you have been buying will cost you less than they did. But it is un likely that you will save the money, Once the luxury habit Is acquired it Is hard te break. And that money which you don't need te pay te the Govern ment nny mero is very sure te go into ether luxuries which you couldn't get In the old days of the luxury tax. The real luxury tax is net paid te the Government, and never was. It is a tax that you impose en yourself, by in dulging In things which give you noth ing In return, but temporary self gratification. And it is a far heavier tax than n 10 per cent tax, for the amount it will take from your income by and by is pretty near the sixe of the income it self. EVERY penny expended for foolish ness for things that you cannot afford for luxuries that you learn te want merely because ether people have them laa tax net only en your earnings, but en your future. If you have mere money) than yen can spend, no one is going te object te your wearing $200 overcoats or even buying a yacht. But if you are getting these things at the expense of your own future you are putting a luxury tax en yourself which is for harder te bear than any ever imposed by the Government. THE desire te hare all the comforts that ether people have la natural, but it is very hard te tell just what arc comforts and what are luxuries. And if you fall Inte the way of being tee comfortable you will seen be about as progressive as the cat which curls In purring comfort before the fireplace. And you will net be as wise as the cat, for she has the knack of making human beings provide for her and giv ing no return. That is n knack you will never possess. Yeu lire free from the Government luxury tax new, but you can only free yourself from the really burdensome luxury tax by your own efforts. Will power alone, which is a diffi cult thing te cultivate, will put an end te that tax.
