An Optlmlstle View Te (he Editor el th Kventna VubUa Ledetrt . 8lrI leve your city nnd cannot re frain from writing a brief letter in its defense against a great number of let ters which you have printed from per sons who have found the pcople here net dcservlng of the name of ''Broth ''Breth crly Leve." My expcrlcncea have been qiilte the reverse I came here only a short tlme age n atrarlgcr, nnd was I taken in? I was, but net in the usual sense of the Interpretation of taken in." It wna probably due te my disposi tion. All my life 1 have net cared te knew pcople but theso thnt were "worth while. I find greater companionship In geed books than In bad friends. I have nlwayn been of an obliging and happy disposition and I gained my friends in that way. I will give you briefly n little experience, only ene of the many I have had. A gentleman considerably elder than myself needed some asslstance from seme ene, and fortunately for me, I was that seme one. He was se ap preciative of that kindness, that he questioned me, complimented me en being the right eert of n young man and told me that if he could de any thing for me te return the favor I should call en him. I accepted his offer when the opportunity came, but only In a way te make him feel that I had no ulterior motlve In ray first kindness te him. Gradually a chance aenunlntnnceshlp proved te be a lasting friendship. He took me up, se te speak, and introduced me te all of his friends of my age; in vited me te his home, made me feel perfectly nt home and has repaid me lu a liundrcd different ways for my original kindness te hlra. I have had many ether similar experiences, until in a short space of tfme I have a long list of friends, often taiing my ability te find tlme te keep tip their ac quaintance. It was mv efforts that brought this condition about, but it is the true Hplrlt of the Philadelphia who ansistcd me. I think all theso who complain of the nbsence of friendly feeling in this city nre wrong, because they are net willing te wait until that feeling is cultivated through patience nnd con sideration for ethers. That Smile of Contempt Te iht Editor of the Evening PubUe Ledger: Sir Through the medium of your valuable paper will you allow me te re turn thanks te theso geed-natured and geed-hearted people of America (?)who arc endeavoring te make the life of a stranger in this city a little mere cheer ful? I hope I have net taken up tee much of your valuable space. A LONELY EXILE. Philadelphia, December 28, 1021. What De They Expect? Te the Editor of the Evening Publle Ledger: Sir I have read with considerable interest the many letters that have ap peared In your People's Forum from pcople who claim that Philadelphia Is slew, Indifferent te strangers and is a city that belles its familiar nickname. What ue theso strangers expect I no ene invited them here. They came here for their own advantage. They found it n desirable nlace for a residence and almost immediately show that they have misjudged us, nnd they nre criticising tm for ilelntr just what they would be unwilling te de under the name circumstances. The foreigner, te get away from op pression nnd te earn n decent llvlns. cemeu te our country and almost Im mediately starts a propaganda againBt uh. They nre uiHviiiing te conienn with our customs, try te run things te suit themselves nnd yet they nre all quite unwilling te return te their former homes, for they knew they have bet tered themselves In coming here. The same is true of this city. The foreigner, through his ignorance, has been led te belleve that geld Is te be J picked up in our streets and wealth will pour into their coffers without nn ' effort. 'Jiiey have Been misintermcu. The newcomer from the country, or an other city, likewise comes here with a wrong impression. Any one who has ever lived In a big city knows that con ditions cannot be the same as in a lit tle provincial town. We are net te be blamed for their misapprehension. We nre net te be expected te immediately take up every Tem, Dick or Harry who comes here. They would net de this, we have a perfect right te cheese our friends. Wc want only te associate with theso who nre congenial, nnd we enre net whether they feel Inclined te disparage our cred ited hospitality. Every ene is of a differ ent temperament nnd wants te live his own way, nnd why deesnny one haw the right te expect of us that we mint clinnee our raode of living or our Ideas simply because they are lonesome. In variably the. clans of critics are ob eb ob jectlenablo people, and thnt is the rea son why they mm it dimcuit te mnite friends here. Let them criticize, but we ure disposed te fellow the even tenor of our way as our own idean dictate. G. W. L. Philadelphia, December 31, 1021.
