As an offset was the news of further
slashing of prices bv the independent
steel companies. Tliis information was
distressing when It was realized that
most of thee concrns were losing
money tm each ton of steel on n basis of
present operations. een when steel was
selling several dollars a ton higher.
These days, however. It Is ever dif
ficult to determine just what will be
the interpretation of Wall Stieet to all
slgnilicant ilevelopments. This frnility
wus strikingly exemplified in the com
placent reception of the announcement
of the finding of the Federal Trade
Commission against the Famous Play
ers Corporation. A few days ago the
suggestion that the (iovernment was
after the concern wns used as an excuse
for making the stock one of the more
prominent bear targets. Today the in
cident was viewed in nn entirely dif
ferent light, it being pointed out if
the company was found guilty, as
charged, It must surelj hnve a clean
cut monopoly of the moving picture
business. From a market viewpoint
that was far from being a bear argu
ment. The openinp market was mixed, with
interest running lnrgel to the special
ties, of which the Mexican oils were
the lending attractions. Additions to

Thrift
FAILURE to properly employ funds !s an
extravagance exceeded only by failure to
save at all.
Practical thrift demands more than mere
accumulation of money. It demands the intel
ligent employment of funds so that they may
be productive of their greatest earning power.
High-grade bonds offer a most practical method
through which you may receive a good return
from the money invested. They are well se
cured and return an income of from five and
one-half to seven or eight per cent, if bought
at today's prices.
Our September Offerings of carefully selected
bonds recommended by us for Investment
will be senttjupon request for PL-JUG
