Witt and Itrnzit plajeil great ball ' yesterday, but the Macks could not I overthrow the Atlanta team of the Southern Association. Atlantn won the Kqmc. 7-4. and it was the sixth defeat in a row suffered by Mack's regulars. When a club of the class of Atlanta, that has only played one game before meeting the Athletics jestcrday, can make the big leaguers look o poorly with the old war club, there must be something radically wrong with the f.y.s tem to round the batsmen lo natural fnrm Kverv ordinary method has been tried i without success. Therefore, something ut of the ordinary will have to b-1 tried. ! To any one conversant with baseball ! one glaring fault developed as the result J of yesterday a game. That is that vver man on the team is hitting too hard at the ball. Each of the Athletics is either aiming at the fence or else trying to put the ball over, and the natural result is that they too often fail to meet the ball nquarcly and either pop up to the in fielders or send long tlies to the out fielders. Harry Davis has the correct idea. In season and out of season the former captain of the Athletics is urging the players not "to swing too hard at the hall. In' practice he cautioned them to choke their bats more and meet the ball without turning themselves inside out in trying to' drivv It out of the lot. Now that is just the, secret of the lack of hitting by the Athletics. They arc allowed too much latitude when at the plate and if they wcrn made to tin derstand that they will have to change somewhat their style and that a failure to obey orders will carry some eort of penalty they would find that they might rot make as many longs hits as they desire, but that they would have better batting averages and their value to th's team materially increased. NEW ARRIVALS AT PIS CAMP SHOW THEY HAVE SPIRIT Mack Wheat Gets Out and Trains, Even Though After Practice Hours PLAY FLORIDA COLLEGE TODAY AND TOMORROW Ily SPICK HAUL (.ainesvllle. Fla March Ml. If the motive of the Phillies hold-outs and late arrivals was to prevent indulging in spring practice, their attitude since arriving here has not indicated it. On the contrary, every one of them has gone out early ami remained Into on the field and has done more work than uuy of the others. Of course, this is what they should do, but it might not be expected that they would do it if they had been deliberately planning to dodge work. The day that Cy Williams arrived he went to the tie'd and, nlthough ap parently in excellent physical condition, finished his day's labor by taking a couple turns around the track, a half mile jaunt. Casey Sicngel and Irish Meusel did the same thing that Williams had done. Yesterday Mack Wheat did uot arrive until in the afternoon. The Phil's were through their work for the day a little later, so that Wheat had no time to get into togs with his teammates and go through their work for the day n little later. However, he corralled Jimmy King, Hubbell, a couple of the young pitchers and Tacks Murphy und went to Flem ing Field. This quintet warmed up. had a little practice, caught fungoes, tan around the track, then finished by tossing the basketball around in the gymunsium for half un hour. All of which goes to show that the Phillies have some pep if nothing else. As long us they continue to show this Bpirit they may get along fairly well, at least well enough to hold their own at the take-off until the weak spots in the club can be strengthened. The games this afternoon and to morrow with the boys from the Uni versity of Florida will give Donovan a chance to watch his men aguin under fire. Of course, as contests these games will amount to nothing; nevertheless, some kind of a line can be got on Irish Meusel as a first baseman and on the other infivlders. Donovan ha'd Meusel working at first for the Yanigans because he believed ' he would get more chances, but, us it I turned out, Jack Miller, who first I based for the regulars, had a good deal ! more to do than Meusel. The regulars had no trouble in trim ming the Yanigans. II to -. but it was a game in which several of the youngsters showed more than they had in any previous workouts. This applies particularly to Timmie and David, a couple of the hurlers, who pitched for the regulars. KENAI STARTS PRACTICE I Germantown Baseball Team VNill Open Season With Erie A. A.
