DHE GREAT January Sales started last Monday with such enthusiasm as was never before seen at the opening of any new year. All January sell ing records were exceeded. Practically every Department did a much larger volume of business than at the opening of last January. Thousands of different articles of merchandise were marked at less than the prevailing prices for the autumn and winter season of 1920, and tens of thousands of customers have shown their appreciation of our determination to GIVE THE DOLLAR A LARGER PURCHASING POWER. It is true that some folks expected greater reductions in some lines than it is possible to give. It is true that in some lines of goods there has been little or no reduction in cost to us but even in these Departments numerous lots ' have been greatly reduced in price for the Sale. It is also true that, despite the Firm's specific instructions that no matter whether the present market cost is higher or not, NO PRICE SHOULD BE HIGHER THAN THE REGULAR 1920 PRICE, a careful checking-up revealed some items which had been re duced last month, and then marked at the regular price after inventory based on market cost. These scattering errors and misunderstandings have been corrected. NO PRICE IS HIGHER THAN THE 1920 PRICE (with the possible exception of lots here and there that may have been procured for Clover Day or other special occasions before this Sale). The Great Outstanding Fact is That ALL Our Prices Are RIGHT; That Thousands of Things Are Lower Than in 1920, and Thousands Below the Present Market Value A question blank, filled out in detail and signed by each Department head, results in the foil-owing carefully compiled information: A List Showing the Number of Lots at LESS Than Regular 1920 Prices Silks, 195 different lots Wool Dress Goods, 500 lots Cotton Dress Goods, 261 lots Domestics, Blankets, etc., 275 lots Upholstery Goods, 444 lots China, Art Wares, 300 lots Housefurnishings, 350 lots Art Needlework. 100 lots Hosiery and Underwear, 180 lots Men's Furnishings, 122 lots Handkerchiefs, 87 lots Ribbons, Laces, etc., 240 lots Muslin Underwear, Negligees, etc, 550 different lots Corsets, 260 different lots Infants' Wear, 146 lots Furs, 300 different items Waists, 200 different lots Millinery, 350 different lots Misses' Wear, 3100 garments Women's Suits and Dresses, 29 different lots Women's Coats, 40 lots (NOTE These lota in Women's Outer Apparel represent many hundreds of garment."! new lots being constantly added.)
