'Conch Myers, who halls from tbd Wwt, 1 the new Lnnsdowns tutor, nntl nsldo from the fact thnt he comes from the .' '8how Me" stntc. there ore reasons to believe he will turn out a winning team. Ooach Myers has played foot- l ball eome flixteen years, and was n ,'wemoer of the Seventy-ninth Division , tcom. Manager 'William StrlnEfcllow. the likely Quarterback, has arranged the $flrt game of tho season with the Penn L Charter School eleven on October 1. ILansdowne has lost many of tho star flayers, Including Captain Lyster, who Shan entered Pennqvlvnula Military Col- ,, lege. The cadets get a fine halfback. A captain will be elected later in tnc tea on. Lconanl Wilcox, who was captain last year, Is now at Lafayette, whero ho Tvlll try for the freshman team as a tackle. Damon, guard, is at Cornell, nd Tom Krall. one of the star back flold players, will help to strcnghten tho Penn freshman clcTcn this Reason. There are three veteran who were out yesterday, and will greatly strcnghten , the squad. They are Hob uoouman, I halfback, who has played guard and halfback; New Wilcox, the 160-pound halfback, who ha" nlso had threo years' I pxporieuce on the team, and E,'ir Brown, n backfield man. Brown played I on the Lansdowne team the last two ' years. I Tho signal and dummy drill yesterday brought out some likely loosing piay ors. Brumfleld and Korn, nt end: Ilhoades and Brown, as guards, made a good showing. Walton and Behan did good work In tlie bncKIielti. natten, or last year's team, Is expected buck at center. Lawnsdowne High students nrp enthulastlc ovei the coming senson nnd look forward to the games with Penn Charter, Cheltenham nnd Radnor which are scheduled for early In the season. Gcrmautown High School has suffered a severe loss as Captain Schacffcr, the atar halfback, has entered Virginia Poly where Coach Stanley Sutton, formerly of Germantown Academy, is rounding out the team. Schacffer's loss is somewhat offset, however, by the addition of a Northeast High star on tho Germantown squad. Bates, the Northeast -ncl. has entered Germantown nnd will be a candidate for the team. Other former warriors arc Cornog. guard; Hulber- ttadt, quarterback; Teagen, halfback; Kaufman, halfback, and Henklcs, end. The sqund Is not largo, but more candidates aro reporting dally. Thirty candidates aro actually at work on the field In back of tho school. With the exception of possibly Southern High the Germantown High School has the hardest problem of any of the Girabel i Cup teams in getting a representative eleven In shape for the big matches. U. S. JUDGE ASSAILS JERSEY "BOOZE RING" State Must Be Rid of Crooks, Ho Tells Grand Jury at Tronton TELEPHONE INQUIRY PLANNED BY BOARD Trenton, Sept. 15. Charging tho United States grand Jury at the opening of the September term yesterday, Judge John Ilcllstab said that information gathered by federal authorities and from other sources indicated that hun dreds of thousands and perhaps millions of dollars had been made by the "whisky ring" operating In New Jer sey. The charge was a scathing de nunciation of the violators of prohibi tion amendment and the national pro hobltion law nnd included vigorously expressed Instructions to the jurors to investigate the entire situation and to return indictments irrespective of who mlelit be Involved. Particular condemnation wa. aimed by the court nt the systematic practice by which whisky profiteers had been enabled to reap Inordlnato gain from their illegal trade. Intimating that nubile officials employed to enforce the law might have played a guilty part In the giant conspiracy Judge Ilcllstab told the Jurors It was their duty to see that no guilty man escaped, but to Indict nil found to be Involved, either In the traffic itself or In aiding or abetting those who carry it on. "We offer no excuse," said Jndge Rcllstab, "for any official who may be guilty of aiding the criminal, ob structing the administration of jus tice to tho crook who are engaged n this nefarious vork. Remember also it makes no difference as to the guilt of the participants In this crime, whether they actually traffic In Intoxi cating liquors or whether they aid or ubct the actual trafficker." WILL EXAMINE CONTRACTS llarrisburg, Sept. 15. rrobably tho next step that will be taken In Penn sylvania nnd other states In trying to establish n fair rate for telephone serv ice will be au Investigation Into the re lations existing between the Bell Tele phone Co. and the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and the effect that has on the rate Issue. In formally adopting tho agreement reached last week between counsel for tho complainants against tho Bell com pany's rates of last April and May and counsel for the compnuy, uu rublic Service Commission in Its order says it is willing to co-operate with similar commissions from other states In such an Inquiry. In that connection tho nnA mtuelnn en VH i "WMtn hp onmmlsslon found nnd determined thnt the estimated revenues of tho new tariff schedule do not ex ceed n fair return upon the used nnd usnblo property of the respondent, there are two Important features in tho allocation of a portion of the revenues which require discussion. One. Is the payment of 4Vj per cent annual license revenue to the American Telephone and Telegraph Co , and tho other Is the dividend of toll revenues between tho Amerlcnn Telephone and Telegraph Co. and tho Bell Telephone Co. of Penn sylvania. ., "Docs the Bell company pay the parent company too much under tho 4 per cent contract, and docs it rcccivo too little as Its share of the revenues through toll nntl long-distance business? These questions and particu larly that in reference to the amount nnd conditions of the license revenues, have been nnd remain troublesome to this nnd every other state utility com mission which has hnd to deal with f lAitrTi "It occurs to this commission that the only way in which it is possible to correctly nnd permanently solve tho license revenue and other questions en tering Into the relations between the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and Its subsidiaries is by an arrange ment to hold an exhaustive and con clusive investigation of the accounts and contracts between them. The action by tho commission virtu ally terminates 120 complaints against the tariff schedule effective Inst April for toll calls and In May for rentals. Tho order restores free exchange areas to points within ten miles with a flexi ble provision to go beyond thnt limit where the question of community in terest is involved. Classifications ire modified also. One classification fixes rates for communities with C000 to 10,000 telephones, such as llarrisburg, Altoona, New Castle and similar places. That is allowed to remain as, it is, but a new classification is created for municipalities with 15000 or 7C00 tele phones, nnd these will get a slightly lower rental. Tho classification relating to ex changes with 1000 to 2000 telephones, wus modified to apply to places with 1000 to 2o00 telephones. There is to be a 23 per cent reduc tion on private branch uxchnnges, the four-party line servico in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh is restored nnd u modi fication Is effected for free zones in farmers' exchanges, the length of the lino being extended from one to two miles. The question of the Philadelphia de partment store eTchango rates will be disposed of after brief have been filed. Ventnor to Buy Bathing Beach Ventnor City. Sept. 15.
