Since, November, 1018, there has been an average decline In tho market price 01 nun-grade railroad honda listed on the New York Stock Exchanro of 12.0 points, the second grade railroad bonds having declined an average of 10.88 point, xno average decline in listeu public utilities bonds since the armi stice has been 10.12 points, wblW the average decline in listed Industrial bonds has been 10.47 per cent. This shows an averago decline In these four classes of listed bonds of 14.62 per cent slnco November, 1018. From a Philadelphia standpoint noth ing hat, hurt so much as the alarming shrinkage in the market value of the stock of the United Oas Improvement Co., which, unquestionably. Is held more largely by Phlladelphlans than any other security tradod in on the Stock Hlxebange, Until a few months ago this stock was looked upon as one of the safest utility lnvsutments of fered. With the big accumulated surplus and the long years of uninterrupted prosperity many regarded this invest ment practically as safe as a govern ment bond. The unfortunate position which tho company finds itself in as a result of the abnormal conditions which developed In tho aftermath of the war could not possibly havo been fore seen. It Is Just one of those unfor tunate accidents 'that often befall the best regulated families. It looks, of course, now as though the dividend must be cut. Six months ago it seemed as if this could be averted. Even if such a radical step is neces sary, holders can And a crumb of com fort in the fact that, when normal con ditions arc restored, old dividends will be resumed. Forced to Retrench Pathetic stories of shrinking Incomei by reason of ill-advised or unfortunat Investments are to be heard most an) day. A few weeks ago a luxuriously fur nished apartment was advertised to rent in one of tho Atlantic City papers A Philadelphia broker, who commutes dally to the shore, inspected tho apart ment on behalf of one of his clients contemplating wintering at tba shore He found the apartment, a veritable dream, occupied by an aged couple who told a pitiful tale of forced economies by reason of having their income cut off nearly 76 per cent by unfortunate in vestments. . The old gentleman told tho broker he had accumulated considerable wealth in his business and believed he had in vested the money Bafcly to provide ea and comfort for himself and his wife durlne the rcmalnlnc vcars of their lives. . "Up until two years ago," he aaldi "we occupied a comfortable apartrnen In a fashionable quarter In New York leasing It by the year, as ourvwlntora- were spent abroad In Southern Italy Default of Interest in a number of the bonds I held compelled us two years ago to seen a cheaper living, wo came t this city, and within the last year six: companies, the bonds of which I hold went Into tho hands of receivers. Our neome Is just one-fourth of what It for merly was and we are compelled to sur render this apartment and dispose of our household effects ,ln order that we may exist and live on a still cheaper scale." Tho broker was able to secure a transfer of the lease and obtain better prices for the household effects than the old couple had anticipated. They are comfortably Quartered in one of tho second-class hotels, British Foreign Trade Alfred Nutting, clerk to the American consulate general, at London, furnlshefl some very interesting figures on the British foreign trade for six months of the current year, compared with the corresponding period In 1010 nnd 1013. Tho total Imports in 19111 were 378. 740.000 nnd exports 310.111,385. In 1010, the imports were 710,787,420; exports. 300.100.427 : In 1020, imports wore 1,033,334,084 and exports 778, 307,032. It will be noted, that while Imports in 1010 were not far snort ot double the valuo In 1013, exports increased by only some 80 per cent, and that while tin Imports In 1020 exceeded those of 1010 by approximately 60 per cent, exports roso by nearly the equivalent amount In value, and were but little less than 100 tier cent above 1010, while re-exports nave advanced nearly two nnd one-half times In 1020, compared with tho pre ceding year. The balance of imports over exports and re-exports, In 1010, aggregating 320,000.000 has been re duced In 1020 to 200.000,000, com pared with 02,000,000 In 1013. ui me six months' Importn In 1020. 424,304,117 comprised raw material 381,618.840 food, drink, nnd tobacco and 220,087,500 manufactured goods, the balance consisting of animals and parcel-post nondurable Imports.
