Not that the heroines were old, by un mean!), but (he pictures made them look older. No, if I remember rightly, most of them we-.e under twenty-five and on the pleasant side of that, too, and yet tbe picture did not do tnem justice. I am certainly curious to see this one. They wero astonished when ho told them what their business was which was to find Pudgte, lonesome Ilenr'a twin brothor, who had been rescued from the circus menagerie by Peggy and Billy, as told In a previ ous story, . , .. .. "If you are such a great wizard per haps you can tell us whero to nnd the homesick bear we are seeking.' said tho animal keeper with a dark Town. - That question mado Peggy WW; Supposltur tho Llttlo Wlaard should tell whore Pudgle was and he should be captured nnd fee dragged back to tno circus to die of homesickness. ,.,,. And the question seemed to bother Wogglo and Boggle, the wasked beasU on which Peggy and the W"le Wlwrd wero riding toward the unknown land They shivered and shook aa though tney had a chill. . , ,,,,, But tho Llttlo Wizard answered with a rhyme that comforted Peggy, although It did not mnko Wogglo end Bougie stop shivering and shaking. This rhyme was: "Pudglo Bear roams the woods free, Happy as a bear should be. If you'd stay aa free as he, Turn about and quickly flee. Tho animal keener frowned at theso words, but his helper spoko up promptly: "Thnt sounds llko good senso. We ve wasted too much tlmo searching for that bear. Ho wasn't any good to the circus anyway, because he disturbed every ono with his homesick walling and howling. Let's call It n bad Job and go home, The animal keeper, as he frowned, stared nt Woggle nnd Boggle, who shiv ered and shook harder than ever under his gaze. Slowly the frown cleared away from tho keeper's faco and an ovll tsrln took Its place. "It would bo a bad Job if we went back to tho circus empty-handed," he said slowly, "but It would bo a good Job If we took back three strange ani mals In plnco of that bear." And he stnred nt Wogglo, Bogglo and Wee in n way that told what ho meant, He wanted to capturo them and tako them to the circus. Woggle nnd BogKlo and Peggy were scared, but Wee danced around as if ho dared the circus men to catch him. As for tho Llttlo Wizard ho bagan an other rhymo: "Circus men would trobble. Woaslc, Woo nnd Boggle. They might catch the air. For that's all that's there. When my magic stick I wobble." Tho Llttlo Wizard hopped off Bogsrle's back and bent over to say something to Wee. Tho nnlmal keeper nnd his helper Jumped forward ns If to grab tho tiny creature. The Little Wizard stepped out of their way and waved his stick over Wee. who bobbed up end down In front of tho circus men. Quick ns a flash the animal keper seized Wee. And Just as quickly ho let go with a howl of amazement. Wee's false face head had come off In his hand and there wasn't anything Inside of It. The helper grabbed Wee's body, and as he prrabbed, he. too. gave a howl a howl of terror. Tho hompcrs which had covered the tiny animal's body crumpled up In his hands There wasn't any thing Insldo of It. Only h. shrub was growing whero Wco had stood. Tho Little Wizard laugned as ho re peated his rhymo t "Circus men would gonblo WcRglo, Wee nnd Boggle. They might catch the nlr, Far that's all that's there. When my maglo stick I wobble." Tho Llttlo Wizard lifted his stick as If he would wave It over the animal keeper nnd his helper, but they drew back In fear. In the ncxto hapter thco Ircus men get a bang on tho ear and another scare.
