'MtSRK ,v ym rrc !niB THE early French and English trap pers and explorers travelled from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi with out crossing a single running stream. To do this they used the lakes and the twelve fortages between them. wwwm x$s Light, smoothly gliding birch bark canoes furnished a comfortable mode of travel upon the lakes. But, on the Portages the travellers had to face an ordeal that tried and tested the mettle and muscle of the stoutest, Over those twelve Portages have toUed such men as La Salic, with his band of white men, the first to see the Ohio, and first to explore the Mississippi: Celeron, the courier of the French King, carrying his leaden plates to annex the new country to France: Marquette, in his journey to the Mississippi, and the zealous missionaries in their quest of new people to win for the faith. "These places are called Portages," wrote an old Jesuit three centuries ago, "inasmuch as one is compelled to transport on his shoulders all the baggage and even the boat in order to find some other river, or make one's way around these rapids and torrents : and it is often necessary to go for several leagues loaded down like pack-mules, climbing mountains and descending valleys, amid a thousand difficulties and a thousand fears, and among rocks or amid thickets known only to unclean animals," THE modern tourist journeys from coast to coast on cushions of air. The properly designed pneumatic tire gives to present day travellers the same easy-riding-comfort on land that the canoe gave our ancestors on the water. But very often the tire designer in his zeal to produce a sturdy tire gains strength at the expense of riding-comfort. Rough riding tires take the joy out of motoring. PORTAGE TIRES are big comfortable tires, scientifically designed to absorb jolts and jars and to keep shocks from reaching the passengers. At the same time PORTAGE TIRES easily withstand the terrific impacts that every tire receives in the day's journey over uneven pavements. Perfectly balanced construction is the reason: that is no great secret but it is a most difficult perfection to achieve. i m Portage Tires Ride with Canoe Comfort aOiait4 Cv&teft&Jti s&e DIRECT FACTORY BRANCHES ATLANTA, KA :70 Uj Street BOSTON.
