Loftls, on what she tcrmR "a wild, drunken party" In his apartment which ended in the millionaire diamond mer chant's death Friday night, is being hold "merely as a material witness and apparently waft in no way responsible for the death of Mr. Loftls," Chief of Police Garrlty declared last night after n fortyelght hour investigation, dur ing which Miss Woods and n score of other persons were repeatedly ques tioned. While the questioning of Miss Woods revealed some contradiction in her statements it failed to shake her origi nal story that Loftls. staggering from liquor, fell, striking his head against a doorknob when her fiance, Itoy Shaynr, entered tho apartment in response to her telephone call for help. Miss Woods steadfastly denied that she or any one elso had hit Loftls with a whisky bottle, fragments of which were found near his body. The police now are making every ef fort to trace the "wild taxlcab ride" Miss Woods sajs she took when she fled from the Loftls apartment, leaving Shajne with tho body.
