v ., , M:r11 READERS' VIEWPOINT Letters to the Editor on Cur rent Topics A Policeman Expresses Thanks To J Editor of tht JSvcntno Publlo Ledger Sir Kindly permit mo aa a member of the Bureau of Police to thank you ?or Ihe straightforward manner In which TOur paper (July, 1st) published the resignations of Police Lieutenants Kw jne ami Jeffreys. Their records as pollcemon deserved such an honest publication and not such bs appeared In divers other Philadelphia newspapers. Having been a member of the Bureau of Pollco for morfJ than twenty years and having been a close observer of all nollcc matters, etc., during that time, I feel that I know whereof I speak, and even though I am not personally acquainted with either of the gentlemen I do know that they were both upright and fearless in tho performanco of all their duties. Thanking you again for your honest atatemenlB In tho matter and trusting that you will contlnuo to give honest and worhy men their due. JUST A POLICEMAN. Philadelphia. Tax the Nonvoters T tht Editor of the Evening Publlo Ledger: Sir In your editorial Inquiry on Mon day. "Why Don't People Vote?" you Mated that mure than 10,000,000 failed to do so at the last presidential election. As'c.'s every legal voter II poll tax, col lect from all who have failed to do their duty as shown by poll, books, and tho problem will, In my personal opinion, be solved. ONE WHO ALWAYS VOTES. Newficld, N. J.. July 13. The Facts In the Case To tht Editor o) the Evening Publlo Ltdoer: Sir In last Saturday's papsr you printed a small matter In regard to an accident In Hunting Park that after noon. Whoever gave tho Information ns to my serving overseas and being decorated several times Is telling you a lie. tt Is truo that I am a member of the .Sixth Itcglmcnt of tho National Guards of Pennsylvania, that my name and addles were not given by me, but by S. Eynon, 3047 North Sixteenth Mreet, who is also a member of the National Guard of Pennsylvania. J. N. "WALDECHEH. Why Money Goes Away To the Editor of tthe Evening Publlo Ledger: Sir Apropos of your various excel lent editorials and recommendations toward the housing situation of Phila delphia and vicinity, a letter received by me from tho president of a Cleveland firm dealing In Investment securities may be of Interest to you. It Is brief and to the point and rends as follows: "The writer ii more or less familiar with your city and It has many advan tages, but for several months we have had all tho real estate loans wo could possibly handle secured by Cleveland real estate nt rates higher than you mention." Perhaps It Is the status of tho In terest bearing laws of Pennsylvania that Is the reason of nil the money golnir to New York at 15 per cent Interest and also western Investors of tho Cleveland firm caliber retaining their funds for western inortgago Investment! nt 8 and 10 per cent. H. K. HEAD. Philadelphia. July 12. Keeping Children Fit To the Editor of the Evening Publio Ledger: Sir A paragraph In "Short Cuts" recently gave a glimpse of results from a health survey of Kansas City school children. Ten per cent were underweight on first examination Clinical and dental scrvlco were provided and pure food served and the children showed a gain of 278 per cent. Your comment was "From which It would appear that not all the children needing our aid aro In Europe. It may bs that there are some right here in Philadelphia." Of 168 children weighed and moasurcd In tho Philadelphia health council and tuberculosis committee's portable health clinics last week, 120 were found under weight. Fourteen of them were from ten to twenty-five pounds below normal Virtually every one of thirty-seven given rigid physical examination were found physically defective tn some way. The committee's physicians and nurses not only examine the children, but tell them how their defects and nllments tmi b-9 corrected. Nurses visit the parents to offer friendly aid and advice. Thus the parents learn what Is the mat ter with their chlldien and are taught simple and accessible means of keeping them physically and mentally tit. Cases needing Immediate medical attention are lefirred to physicians, hospitals or dis pensaries where, proper treatment may be had. This work, In city recreation centers wheie clinical advantages hitherto were not available, has just begun. Fair re sults cannot bo determined now. But ecn these first reports show that we n ed not go to Europo to seek children suffering from malnutrition. Philadel phia lias an alarming proportion of Utll ones who do not obtain tho proper food, and these aro not especially children of tho poor. Carelessness, lgnornnco and the formation of bad bating habits, aru given by physicians as causes. Malnu trition Is Indeed a menace, they claim, as It leads to mental and physical dis ability. Perlodlo physical examination of chil dren, the Introduction of a definite health program In the publlo school curriculum, and nutrition classes available to all mothers and housowlvos are among tho, remedies suggested by the Philadelphia health council nnd tuberculosis com mittee. SAP.A L. LOCKWOOD, Assistant secretary. Distribution to Blarrte To the Hdltor of the Evening Publlo Ledger: Sir In a recent Isbuo of your valu able paper, Mr. Preston B. Hohcrts, of JIooreBtown. N.
