New York, June 22. Today's stock
market followed its recent uneven
course without getting nnywhore in
olther direction until last hour when
the whole list sold off on It per
cent coll money. Moro interest wns
supplied In the further strength of Brit
ish rxclmnge, with demand bills rising
to $1, the highest quotation in more
than two months. This strengthened
recent reports of a heavy movement of
gold from Krjglond In the near future,
which, It it estimated, will rencn oe
tween 52.000.000 and $3,000,000.
The S per pent renewal rate for call
loans supplied sufficient reasons for
the lifeless state of the stock market.
The practical suspension of speculative
activities, in turn, supplied sufficient
reasons for the apparent sagging ten
dency of the general list, more espe
cially some of the recent active specula
tive favorites.
Prospects of nny Important easing
in the money situation before the end
of the month are not bright. While
the calling of loans yesterday was gen
rallv re-nrilrd ns n. temnorarv eontll-

July 1 settlements, which reach ex-
I tremely large proportions, will preclude
nn- mntxrlnl rnslnp of money conditions
until the preparations for these huge
disbursements have been made. Then,
again, it takes time for these funds,
after being drawn from the banks, to
flow back into the regular channels of
business again.
'Wall street did not appear to be pay
ing much attention to the outlaw rail
road strike which, it is generally be
lieved, will be short-lived. In all events
it was ignored in so far as the railroad
stocks were concerned.
It lias been many months since such
a stagnant opening has been experi
enced. The lack of interest perhaps
may be better appreciated from the
fact that some of the usual leaders,
including United States Steel, were un
quoted In the first ten minutes of the
morning session. Price movement wns
ragged, with about an equal distribution
of gains and declines, but nftcr the fir.st
half hour a droopinj tendency developed
In nearly all parts of the list. Pools
tried to enlist public interest in the
chemical issues, but met with scant
success. Although call loans held nt
their initial quotation until noon, then
advanced to 0 per ceut, it apparently
required little pressure to effect further
recessions. Steels, equipments, oils,
motors and shippings, as well as spe
cialties of tobacco and textile groups,
fell back 1 to 3 points Noithern
Pacific and Reading led a moderate
reaction in the rails.
Losses were extended in the last hour
when call money duplicated yester
day's maximum rate of 11 per ceut.
Steels, equipments and motors were
most vulnerable.

! Electric Storage Battery Stock
I Allotment Proved to Be
Discounted
Except for the S3 decline in Electric
Storago nattery the local market con
tinued of the same colorless character.
The drop In Electric Storage nattery
to 121, or .fi under the recent top
price, indicated the formal announce
ment of the stock allotment had been
discounted, when the stock wns carried
up 1) points last week on the street re
ports. The official statement and pro
visions of the allotment differed little
from the street gossip. As expressed
yesterday, opinion (.netned to prevail
that by reason of the tight money mar
ket the stimulating influence of the in
cldent would be cnnsiderablv lessened.
The difficulty to obtain sufficient funds
to take up the allotment took much of
the cream out of the pie.
Money was tighter in Philadelphia to
day than it hns been at any time during
the stringent period. The banks were
expecting a call from the comptroller,
which Influenced them to take every step
to strengthen the reserve position. Nat
urally the stock market suffered, and
business was on a very limited scale.
Tnere was fresh liquidation In Penn

stocks, trading was of a perfunctory na
ture. Little significance, in consequence,
could be attached to the limited trans
actions and slight price changes.

NEW YORK COFFEE MARKET
New York, .Inne 21'. July linuiila
tlon continuen to be the feature of the
coffee market tint mornins. I'resuro
from thh snune sent the lNt oft 13
to 14 points on the call.
Late In the morning July had sold
off to 1.1 'ir and September to 1.1.77c,
and while the present selliug movement
seems to have originated with the
evening up of July in nuticipation of
possible notices on Friday, that posi
tion is still holding n premium over fall
and winter months.
Hulls are disappointed over the con
tinued Miscing tendency, which is be
lieved to be due largely to the dull mar
ket for actual coffee and the dormant
condition of .peculation.
No weakness is so far in evidence iu
the primary markets, judging from the
recent firm offers from Ilrnzil. and thern
are i-omo in the local trade who expect
a hdiiirp advance here right nftcr the end
of Jul v liquidation, as It is pointed out
that Brazilian shippers have sold over
n million tings of coffee for late summer
and enrlv fall shipment, and they have
yet to cover by purchases in the in
terior.

Chicago, June 22. I'ntler iienvy of
ferings the corn market was exceeding
ly weak today. Sentiment wns bearish
and wns intensified by move liberal re

nnd was followed by liquidation by

nn Important part In the selling, which
came from nil quarters through com

ing in evidence was nn resting orders
nnd room covering. More than ."00,000
bushels of corn arrived here today.
Wheat nnd rye also were weaker,
with the (ttsli nnd export demnnd les
nctlve and offerings from the country
Inrgcr. It wns said that exporters luid
reduced their bidi fur wheat three cents
nt fieorgian bay ports.
Onts suffered sharp losses on liquida
tion and short sellin?, caused by the
break in corn nnd n decline of two to
three centx in the cash article, notwith
standing the fnct tlint receipts were

times. There wns no special reason ob
tainable for tho movement.

demand, following yesterday's activity
nnd strength, nnd a firm tone was shown
in Indian Packing, partly because of
tho declaration of a quarterly dividend
yesterday.
