The bnskctball team was Retting together for a final practice before an important game with another club. They all flocked into the "gym" trl and businesslike in their Jumpers, bloomers and soft "sneakers. Hut one girl went into another room and sat down silently with a class in millinery. "Come on, Irene 1" some one called to her. "Wo can't get nlong without our star plaj-cr, you know." But Irene shook her head, Btill silent. a little sulky, unsmiling. A protest arose from the team nnd the captain pleaded with Irene to "be n sport and come on In." Then Irene condescended an exnlnnntlon. ."Not while Itlta's out there," she declared, sullenly. "But you and Iilta play bo well, to gether," the captain protested. Irene shook her head. "We had n fight, nnd I'don't play while she's here." The practice had to go on. The cap tain returned to the floor, to find Wta wearing the same half-sullen, hnlf deflnnt expression. There was nothing to be done. Persuaslous, threats, tears, pleading had no effect. Irene wouldn't play If Wta was on the floor. Wta would play. oh. yes. Wta would plaj , she had uo hard feeling against Irc'r but she knew perfectly well thnt the mere fact of ner pinying woiiki " enough to keep Irene away. So it went on for weeks. Irene couldn t come to rehearse for the play became she knew that Wru had arrived ahead of her. Wta wouldn't let u ellly thing like thnt keep her away, no indeed but she tooK good care to get there first, and prevent nny possibility of hnviDg n silly thing like that happen. They wouldn t tell what it was all nbotit, and they wouldn t clvo it "We had a fight." Irene maintained stubbornly. "I have no hard feelings against Irene," Wta protested. Jt neither would yield an inch. HEY had both joined the organiza tion for the purpose of making friends, having n good time nnd helping other girls to have a good time. The club was under the nuspices of the church, and the boxes of clothing made nnd sent ench J ear to mlsslonnrios, des titute fnmilies. or anybody who needed them, were sent in the kindest, most unselfish spirit. Goodwill was sup posed to be the keynote of the club. Yet these two girls were defeating its verv purpose with their foolish, petty little quarrel. Their own pride was too great to allow them to give in to each other. It sounds like a very silly, trivial kind of affair, doesn't it? But look nbout you. Look nt your bridge club, vour sewing society, your woman's club, your welfare organization, you II see the same silly, trivial affair repeated over nnd over. Two women, pettishly 1 annoyed at ench other, keeping up their grudge relentlessly at the cost of nil tlie peace, goodwill nnd unity of the or ganization. This kind of thing spoils the harmony of any kind of undertaking. It ere ntes a feeling of uneasiness among the other members that defeats any at tempt at co-operation or good feeling. It's the age-old story of selfishness, let ting our own little interests interfere with the accomplishments of nn or ganization. We all know nbout it. we all realize our own weakness along that line. But we wouldn't give in for anything. That would hurt our pride, nnd our pride must not bo disturbed. We detest this in other people why can't wo realize howydetcstablo It is when wo do it. ourselves?
