Sports Editor Kvenlnc I'ulillr Ledger I'opvrlgM, 1)30. bv ruMli l.rdotr Co. Hot Spring. Ark., March 22. OUTSIDE of n fair outfield, a shnky pitching staff, utict-rtnln cntcheM untl a good Infield, the 1020 edition of flic Iiotoii ltetl Sot is in Ricnt s'.inpc for the six montlis' jouriicv through .,n Anicrlcnn League. The once world's cham pions, tlie ball club which had so many good plnycrs two years tgo that it wn Impossible to find plncci for nil of the Htiirs, is but a .shadow of its former self, and even the mott optimistic experts have given up all hope of recovery. The club might look all right, but it m-ver will he the same. Manager Ktl. Harrow is down here working his hend off, but accomplishing nothing. You can't build n brick houe without bricks, and it Is Impossible to get together n real ball club without player. I'd. is decidedly up nsainst it, but he cannot be blamed. He U doing the best lie can and that lets him out. Last year's aggregation with Babe Hutli all seasoti and Carl Mays working part of the time, finished in sixth place. Ruth was there with the wallop and likely to break up the ball game cny old time with a lenjthy wallop, while Mays wai a winning pitcher and could be depended upon to turn In a large number of victories. These men have been sold, they have not been replaced, rnd the club naturally should be weaker than in 11)10. Therefore, no one can tell where the Rd Box will finish. Another thing, which did not help matters, was the fact that severel of the players did not report until late. This did not make mueh of a hit with the other athletes and they were not at all pleased with the arrangement. Vitt nnd Wnlly Schnng became holdouts early nnd Harry Hooper arrived two weeks lute. In the meantime the others were training as much as possible and bemoaning their fate. Spirit like that will not help a ball club. THE sale o Iiac Ruth left a big hole in the team much has not bien filled. Tartan trn the big aee, a wonderful drawing rani, very popu lar with the ttaston fans ami no eelebrntion teas held in Fenway Park ichtn it icas announced he had been purchased by the Yankee, ft i said the fans are very sore and if the team comes back with a brand of mediocre baseball the surviving players will be handed the Well-knou n raxcaberry. Tim Hcmlryx IV ill Help BARROW lias made one deal which brought to Boston Tim Hendry x. Uie most sought-for player in the minors lat year, who led the American Association in hitting. .Tim has been up before, playing with the Yankees nnd the Pt. I.ouis Browns, but last year developed into one of the most vicious rightlinnded hitters the association has seen for some time. Hendryx will fit in with Hooper nnd Mike Menosky. formerly of Washington, in the outfield. Mnrsnns, the Cuban flash, who once was the property of the New York club, has been turned over to the Sox and will be tin- utility outfielder. Hendryx was needed in the gniden because of his rigbthanded hitting. Menosky and Hooper are lefthanders. Stuffy Mclnnis is just as good as ever and will play first base, l'ddie Fcter who, with Menosky and Harry Harper, was traded here last winter, is booked to take care of second, and Everett N'ott, the best fielding shortstop in the league, will stick to his old job. Oscar Vitt. who wants more money nnd can't get it. Is likely to be forgotten for u time and Mike McNnlly, the speedy utility in flelder, will take his place nt third. It is believed that Vitt will be disposed of before the season starts. Harrow. however, will not accept cash, but wants to use Oscar in trade for some needed players mostly pitchers. He already has sent out feelers, but received little encouragement. Still, he may be able to do something before April 1-1. The pitching staff is very uncertain. Herb I'eniioel: looks like the best oi the bunch, although Harry Harper i coming along strung nt the present writing. Waits Hoyt, the kid wonder who was tried out by the tlianth it few yearn ngo and sent to the minors for more experience, lias the makings of a good hurl i and Barrow is banking on him to come through. SJ.tf a vi voimidertd a good very poor season. I herearc, he thing this year to get back into good standing. .Tor Jimi, trhosc arm tccnt dead last year, is working out evrry day, but it is not known & whether or not he hai fully recovered. Much t'i expected of Garry P Fortune, bought from the Eaitcrn League. Carry had two truouis with the Phillies. "Cuddy" Murphy I'ecds Experience THERE are a dozen hurlers on the roster, but the most important is Cuddy" Murphy, the Dartmouth star, who played football last year nnd also was on f.tho baseball team. He looks pretty good, but probably needs more experience. Karr, a righthander from Little Koelc, r.: Babe Ruth, are next in line. Al. Walters is the only good catcher 'of, the work if Schnng does not r"port. Athletics last year as eoac-h. has that same position with the Tied Sox this yi ; ,nnd is working hard with the youngsters. Mike Devine, of Pittsfield, is "promising rookie Boston has been handicapped by the men are our on Wittington Field tin one practice sexsion but it is a tough one. Work starts nt 11 a. m. and lasts ; until " p. m. "Z Perhaps the Kcd Sox will acijuire some more players before the season ? "starts and surprise some of the experts by tcppin; out with a first-class ball club. But players are needed, as the morale of the men i weakening nnd many are ("certain now that they nre on n second division ball club. Demonstrations of such a fact were put on last week, when tho Messrs. Lou Grlmson and Joo Grlffo both hnd to do a lot of separating nnd also uso up a lot -of breath vainly shouting "break " First Johnny Koso gavo n swell exhibition of a clinging vine. That was on Monday night, when Grlmson had his work mapped out for him. Then nt tho National Club on Saturday nlgh,t Johnny Martin, of New York, wrapped himself like a tight overcoat nround the slashing southpaw-socking scrapper. For three rounds Martin, who nlso Is a porUIdo puncher, put on a good bout. Ho started off as If Tcndler was an or dinary boxer one never accused of being n knockerout. Johnny, fearless, punched with Lefty Looie, nnd showed nil soils of willingness to exchange wallops. All of which mennt innc uctcrco Urlffo worked harder than Mnrtln himself. Tcndlcr tried his utmost to score with Ills famous solar plexus punch, but .yinrtui didn't believe in hnving tho wind knocked out of him nnd nobodv can hate him for that. Even though the Gotham glovcman's stylo of stand ing with his right nrm nnd right foot out mnde it difficult for Tcndlcr to land with his best blow a left to the body Martin further comnliented mntters for the Phllndclphlan by clinching, holding , ,n, , ree " ,. No sooner wns he parted when he rnn into another clinch and it was n continual physical job for GriiTo In forcing the New Yorker to .unhook his nrms. Haturday night's bout was a very Igood work-out for Tcndlcr. It wns the second time he wns forced to go the limit since recovering from his recent Mirgicnl operation, nnd three or four more similar bouts will place Lew back into prime shapo to vie with the other stars in the first flight for Benny Leonard s crown. Hlnclilo Shows Cleverness Vnlly Illncklc, of Gray's Ferry, put on a brilliant exhibition In outpoint ing Billy Ilolfc, of Frisco, In each of the scheduled half-dozen rounds. It was a case of n left-jabber against n right-handed puncher, nnd the former won. Illncklc had his left mlt in Itolfc's face continually, keeping the blood streaming from his uofo in tho last five rounds, nnd Billy, the nggressor, was unable to land n solid punch with his dangerous right. Wlllio Kohlcr, of New Tork, nlso stnged n fine battle, substituting for Matty Herbert against Otto O'Kecfe. All that O'Kecfe had was n smile nnd n steel jaw. ns'imilating numerous right handers Hush on the chin nnd retaliat ing with grins, Chnrley Thomas nnd Kddie Wngoud bnttlcd through an un scientific, rough nnd tumble, gruesome six -round draw, while Johnny Wol gast's rally in the sixth session entitled him to n victory over Johnny Loughrcy. .
