Third. It was recommended that the National Commission be notified that the New York club finished third in the American League last season, nud is entitled to the prize money awarded to the third place team. Fourth. A board of review, con sisting of Clarke Griffith and Colonel Ituppert, be appointed and given final and binding powers to review any penalties or fines inflicted by the president in excess of $100 or ten days' suspension, or any action that any member feels will uffect his con stitutional rlnhts. Thus, it can be seen that the big fight, the fight to depose Ban Johnson as president of the American League, resulted in a dismal and flat failure. The Mays case, which caused all of the trouble, had been shoved in the background months ago, and all of the opposing nrtillcry leveled nt the chief executive. Comiskey, Frazec, Houston and lluppert wanted Ban to quit his job, sued him for $500,000 damages, had many injunctions In the New York courts and did everything to pry John son loose from his job. They nssertcd there would be uo compromise, but they evidently were mistaken. Ban Johnson still is president of the American League, his powers are .in no way curtailed and bo will fulfill his contract. He is just as strong as ever, and really has scored a notable tri umph. It remains to be seen, however. how the new order of affairs will work out. If Johnson is a big enough man to forget the past and treat all club owncrH tho same, that "will bo ft) bis favor. Tbc three opposing clubs also must respect bis authority nnd net accord ingly. Baseball Is no place for gentle men with long memories. , Baseball has benefited greatly by tho turn of iiffnli-H. The constant squab, bliug was getting "n tlio nerves of tho fans und, had tho fight lasted much longer, the American League was in u good position to ask for a receiver. Too much legal action disgusted tho followers ot the game and they wonted a quick settlement. "It s a. good thing they got it." This get-together meeting was called at the suggestion of tho lusurgents. utter tho morning meeting adjourned yesterday. First there was n free rtntj open dis cussion among the owners. Comiskey. rrar.ee, Ktippcrt and Huston wanted to do the fair tiling nnd asked n chance to present their eide of the case. They were accorded that privilege, nnd after everything had been talked over the league went Into executive t-essiou. Attorneys lor both hides were there, but the real credit should go to Alfred, S. Austrian, cotiuscl for Comiskey. Wanted Settlement "Wo will stay hero the test of tho week If necessary to get u settlement," said Mr. Austrian before the meeting. "This has gone far enough dnd I will not consent to an adjournment until all of the differences have been' set tled." The club owners also knew this and they stuck to the finish. Carl Mays was reinstated to good standing in the American League. That means he really was not in good standing. In other words, he was under suspension, as he should be, for deserting the Bos ton club in midscoson. refusing to play with that team any more, Therefore, Johnson's nction was virtually ap proved. Otherwise, why should he bo reinstated? The only concession made by the Johnson forces was in awarding third place to the New York Yankees. Had the games won by Mays been thrown out Detroit would have finished third nnd shared tho prize money. But tbo 1 owners decided to allow the flnnl stand ing of the clubs to remain as is, and thereby brought about peace. This board of review, which gives Griffith and Ituppert tho power to re view all cases whose players have been fined in excess of $100 or ten days' suspension, means 'nothing. In the his tory of the American League, outside of the Mays case, no man ever has been fined more than $100 or suspended for more than ten days. Therefore, the flnnl ecoro is 0 to 1 In favor of linn Johnson, , After everything was over Cbloncl Huston said: "Wo have received rt Mexican verdict, which meaus we lost our money but saved our lives. How ever, I am not at all discouraged over tho result. 1 will fulfill every obli gation and work In harmony with the lcngtie. 'Jlorry Frnzcc, when naked if he was feeding the dove of peace, replied : "I'm very tired. I'm going to bcdi" Counio Mnck said nothing, but In ferred that ho was vastly pleased with the result. Connie was not handing us u bum Rtccr. He should bo pleased. William M. Itlchardson, of tho Wash ington Club, nlso was pleased. Ho had been instructed to tuy nothing nnd obeyed orders,. But it was a strenuous meeting. It took time to get the warring factions together nnd pence wns accomplished nfter the hnrdest kind of work, but baseball bcored a wonderful victory and the future looks bright, Tbo only thing now left to be done is to elect n chuirman of the national commission. This will be done today after the committee reports a list of five names. Then the two leagues will sit in joint session and do something. It is believed that Bill Edwnrds, of New York, will be the successor of Garry Herrmann. Johnson is not in fa vor of Judge Landls, and, anyway, It is not known if the judge, would accept the job. Tho other men do not stand out nnd the chnnces arc thnt Edwards will bo offered the place. Last night it was learned that Leo Callahan had been sold to the Indianap olis ciub and Lena Blnckburne wns pur chased by Toronto. Tho sale means nothing, as neither man would have been on the regulnr tenm this year. Cravath was lucky in disposing of-them for real money. Eppa Itixcy still is on the market, although the Chicago Cubs ore bidding strong for his services. Crnvath nsked for two pitchers and n catcher, but Mitchell would not agree.
