KBHREHB CTTW t mm-w7 - f . '" .J' J EVENING PUBLIC LEDGER PHILADELPHIA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1919 11 ra f. ; H V i ft JUST GOSSIP ABOUT PEOPLE Nancy Wynne Tells of the Debutantes at the" Second Opera Performance of the Seaso)i She Hears of Plans for the Mother Goose Carnival TIIEItH were more debutantes at tlio operu last evening than on the open ing uislit, nnil they did loot: clinrmltis, so fresh and young nnd miontaneous. Eleanor and Itosiunond AVurta were with their aunt, Mm. IMnuiml McCul lough, who had the (!eotxi I'acknrd box for the cienlng. Itnchel l'riee and Betty Klllott were in the i:ii K. I'rlre box with Uachel'H parent?, and l'olly Thayer, 1-nulhic lliil and Hcrtrmlr Conaway were the KUCf-tw of Mrs. fllyde. I was glad to ec Kugenla CaRatt home from her miming com so for u while. Slip looks nw fully veil nnd enjoys the woik beyond eveiythlng else. She was a guest of the Clnrrie Dolnns rtfr the opera There tcrtnlnly can be no complaint from dressmnkers and lialrdreserH this seaion, eau thcreV So many new and lovely frocks and so ninuj smnrt ways of arranging and ornamenting the hair. l'olly Thayer looked perfectly lovch In n white satin and si'ver frock. She had a brilliant red ri'itricli feather fan, and that, with the white gown and her dark hair, murio a most wntidorful con trast. I'anline Hell wore a beautiful frock of peacock blue and gold brocade. Catherine Coe looked 'ovclj in cream ' white Mitin. Mrs. Archibald ISarklle, who was n guest In Mr. George McFnd- den's box, wore a black velvet and jet gown which was immense1 bccoininv. And Mrs. Keaisley Mitchell chose a wonderful shade of red elvct, the upper part of the gown being formed of s-e- quined red tulle. , Mrs, Caruso was in tiie first proseo- i Ilium box. She looked very girlish and i attractive in white and po'd. The bodice of the frock was of gold tiMie wiapped ' tightly about the figure. Snaps of gold and rhinestonoK weie on the shoulders. Mrs. John li. Thaer, Jr., was in the orchestra beats. She wore a smait frock of black velvet and tulle. Her hair was most artistically arranged in a great loose knot oft the back of her head. I thought Mrs. Ned Drowning looked extremely well in black. Her gown was made with long net sleeves In her hair she wore a high black aigrette. Altogether it was a very brilliant house. THE McF'.l.cn tea at the Welling ton this afternoon was a delightful entertainment. Their apartment is on the thirteenth floor nnd is u most gorgeous affnir. I believe they had it specially arranged for their pictures, several of the rooms have red wnlls which make a warm background for the beauties of the davs of Gninsborough Itomncy and Raeburn, and for the living beauties of the piesent day as well. Itcally Peggy Thajer. Susan Groome nnd one or two other girls looked as if they had stepped down out of the frames above them. In the reception hall ih u wonderful carved black oak mantel and seats by the fireplace. It bcenied like a different world from demure old Kit tenhouse Square just outside, out of the windows one could see all the lights, of the trrcat citv and it made me feci positively continental. All the smartest people were there and as evcrjbody seemed to have turned out iu thcir'best clothes the effect was very smart in deed. HAVE you heard about the lovely af fair the women iu charge of the Northern Home for Vriendfess Childreu will give on Friday and Saturday of this week in the liellevue-Strntford. , It's to be called a Mother Goose car nival. Supper, if you please, is to be served by Jack Spratt and his wife, i-o you know you'll hnve fats and meat, oo. Old King Cole and his court will furnish the smokes, while the Queen of Hearts will have home-made rand and tarts, and she is going to look like tho real honest-to-goodness Queen of Hearts, too. The Old Woman in the Shoe will be there right in her shoe, and all her children will help her to sell dolls, and j. Jack Horner will hnve his Christmas pie to show. Then Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary will hao her pretty maids there to help generally, and Mrs. Jnck Dandy will hate sugar candy. Besides all this, there is to be ex hibition dancing, fortune telling nnd general dancing in the Hose Garden. It sounds nwfully pretty to me. And tho best part of it is that tho kiddies from the Northern Home will not only 'tenefit by the party, but will tnke part themselves. They will be with the Old Woman in the Shoe. On Saturday afternoon there's to be a children's carnival, nnd 100 kiddies will do some special dancing. A great idea that, don't you think? I SAW Mrs. Samuel Emlen Carpenter on Walnut street the other day look ing very smart in one of those long draped coats of dark-blue duvetvne. Tiie huge collar which wrapped about her throat and tho sleeves of the wrap wera of nutria fur, and her hat, which was of dark blue with n three or four inch brim, was covered with blue os trich feathers. Tho costume was most becoming to her. Her debutante daugh ter, Edith, is very pretty, don't you think? She is bnving a beautiful time this year. F' WAS one day last week, either Sun day or Thanksgiving, I nm not sure which, hut it was a holiday. And did you ever know a furnace to go wrong on any day but u holiday, when one who understands it thoroughly is, of course, not at tho shop? Well, the furnace of the home of cer tain people whom you know nnd 1 know went wrong on said day, and it was cold nnd therefore dangerous to have no heat. So a kind relative bethought hlmscU of one of the head men at the works, who always knew just whnt to do and that he had a telephone. Well, he called him up, nnd straightway said man replied he would come at once, but he had his little girl with him that day and did not know whui to do with her. "Bring her nlong." said Mr. T . So he did. and while he nrranged the furnace. Mrs. T took the little 6lrl in hand nnd talked with her. Little Carlotta wanted to see the house, so Mrs. T took her all through it, and it Was vrry evident that one parent in her family had Ital ian blood, for everything in the house that was of Itnllan persuasion was greatly" admired by Carlotta. After sho had seen the second floor i?he asked in an interested tone: "These 'are such prettv rooms; have you got them all rented?" "Oh, no" said Mrs. T , somewhat taken aback. They then prbeceded to tho next floor and then down again, and Carlotta had a little wrinkle across her forehead. , "Well," she said, "you have got a Jovel.v house, but I feel so sorry that you have all these rooms and not one of them rented." , NANCY WYNNE.
