G.L FOREMOST LOCAL FEATURE Persistent Liquidating Pressure Forced the Stock Down to 53. Trading in Other Locals Limited The extreme weakness of United (las Improvement overshadowed all other operations in today's local market. The stock was again under constnnt liqui dating pressure, which forced the price down .$2.7" to fill, the lowest price it has touched in ninny years. The sell ing movement, while not urgent, was persistent, nnd the support which in the latter part of Inst week served to steady the price wns apparently wlth- drawn; With the demand very lim ited almost each succeeding offering was made at. an additional concession. The low quotation today represents a net decline from the high price of the year cf $21.50. The motive of .the selling still con tinued more or less of a mystery. Some of the locitl interests who nil during the current liquidating movement in the stock have stubbornly adhered to the opinion that no change would be made in the dividend rate, somcwhnt modi lied thnt belief today. At least, otic of prominent banking interest stated that while he was still of the snmc opinion of the fj per cent per annum inte being sustained, there was a prob ability of the management paying the next few quarterly dividends in scrip instead 'of cash. This scrip, he said, would carry interest nt the rate of 0 per cent, anil which, nt the same time, would permit the mnnngement to ob tain necessary funds for corporate pur posos.eheaper than going into the money market. 1 14 14 6 214 14 14 ft 114 14 114 9214 S14 14 14 A VA VA 1 14 1 10914 20- 105 -63 6B 95 3314 30 10014 114 130 - 14 84ft 6 3314 10014 14 81 101 314 109 3 104 14 106 1 IS 18 .. 03 314 34 1 While the continued weakness of the stock was without influcnco on the other local issues, the market, as a whole, made a very dlsamiolutlnc re sponse to the spirited recovery In the .evv iork market. The Ioenl contingent, judging from the charactcr-of the day's operations, nre still indisposed to re newed activities until the labor situa tion Is more clarified. This restraint wns reflected In the rather limited chnrftcter of the deal ings. Prices, however, in the majority were toward improvement. With the exception of Electric Storage Ilattery. the vnrintions, as a rule, were confined wlthi) fractional limits. Electric Stor age Ilhttery rallied $4 to 14S, but later surrendered all of the gain. The re bound likewise lucked the snap which had nttctidcd the rnllies in the preceding recovery movements. On very limited transactions, Ameri can Stores ndvanced 2," cents to -iO1!. Lake Superior also, ou meager dealings, rtillled fiO cents, later losing half of the gain. Keystone Telephone recovered 75 cents of the recent decline on n better understanding of the company's finane li'fi, ',Jn.11?-, Philadelphia Electric nnd Philadelphia Knpld Trnnsit just about held their own. They were handicapped to some extent by .the extreme wenkness of Tnitcd Gas Improvement. Among the inactive!, isSuCSl Pennsylvania Salt ndvanced $1 to 81. while American Oas lost ?1 at -1S. tramps yielded $2 to 210 on small dealings. 1 m efriMl I" ff 3 BANK LOANS SMALLER .
