Nussbaum, of Passionist Order, Among Daad at Corpus Christi LIFE DEVOTED TO THE POOR ' Bishon Taul J. Nussbaum. the "bishop with ft couch of straw," who wag horn and received his early edu cation In this city, has been identified as one of the dead found In the Btorm wreckage at Cornus Christ!, Ter. He died as he lived, In the service of the Sec over which he had no jurisdiction. Bishop Nussbaum's body was found some distance from his home in n poor section where he had evi dently cone to administer aid. Bishop Nussbaum was born in Phila delphia forty-elcht years ago. He was 'raised a Catholic and when seventeen years old decided to enter a monastery. He chose the active but austere life of the Passionist monks and gained ad mission to their monastery at Pitts burgh. In South America As Brother Paul he went to .South America as a missionary after five years of study In Pittsburgh. His first ical work began in Brazil, then In the throes of a revolution. Against the advice of ship officers he insisted upon landing the first dny he reached that country and before nightfall was ministering to the sick and dying. His" neit heroic work was at Itosario. Tic worked there during an epidemic of the bubonic plague. The first night he buried fifteen persons. He cared for motherless children in the chapel and made himself a veritable angel to the inhabitants until the epidemic was checked. After that work he was admitted to the priesthood and became Father Paul. He continued his missionary work during the yellow fever epidemic in Argentina. Following that he was summoned to Home' and was attached to the head monastery of the Passionist order there. Eleven years ago he "asked to be re turned to the United States and as signed as consultor of the Eastern Prov ince and attached to the monastery of St. Michael's, in Hoboken, He devoted his work to the poor and was little known among the richer church-goers. In 1013, (Pope Plus X startled many devout Catholics by the appointment of the Passionist priest to the leader ship of the new See at Corpus Christi. How well Bishop Nussbaum fulfilled that trust is best told by the stories of praise heard of him in the Sec. During all his wanderings and after being created a bishop, he never for got his Passionist vows, liven while bishop of Corpus Christi ho still slept on n couch of straw and wore the hronn cloth garb ot his order around his home.
