BRUNO DUKE Solver of Business Problems By Harold Whitehead Author of "The Ilusiness Career of I'eter Flint," etc. (Copyright) THE PROBLEM OK THIS SML'GtSLKD JUWKLS StaatburR and I'eter Clash FDU a moment I stood dazed and non plused. I had seen StaatburR (alias Steenson) at the Buffalo rail way station get into the hotel bus with his small brown leather bandbas. 1 Kot to the International Hotel bj taxi just ahead of the bus and in that brief trip Stevenson had vanished. I quickly Rathered my with and Imr- rieif to the street. The driver of the bus was panning out the lant lot of bap; gage. Carefully I noted it all. but no leather bag of the peculiar shape ot Stevenson's. His bag had vanished with him. Going to the driver I asked casually: "Where did jou drop my friend? a clean-shaven, middle-aged man. got a big nose and n scar on his cheek." The driver looked sulkily at me nnd then grumbled : "I ain't seen uobod) not like that. It takes all my time to drive without Watehin' who gets in or out." "What hotels dn you pass on jour Way from the station?" "We go past the Harrod House, but We don't take nobody 'eept they come here. This is a private hotel bus!" He turned aay after this speech nnd be gan wiping the windshield of the bus. It was a drizzling night, which made it difficult to sec far ahead. As bis answers were so unsatisfac tory, T next approached the baggage man who rides ou the bus. To my tjurry about Stevenson he scratched his head and remarked : "Say. mister, dang it all. that's got roe goin' for fair. I remember him he's got a big beak, hadn't he? jep. I'm on to him now but T ain't no idee where he hopped off. He sat by the door an' I set inside as well 'cause of the wet. I was a check in' up some baggage checks, au' when I looked up, behold bis seat was empty. I fancy, sir, he got off just afore we got to Frontier street." There jvbr nothing to do but go back over the ground and try to locate him. X felt a dismnl failure here was I, in truBted by Ilruno Duke with an im portatit mission, and which I li.zle so stupidly. With au increasing exasperation against Stevenson, I tramped along Frontier street with head well down, the better to meet the. drizzle and the wind In a few minutes I came to the Harrod House and casually entered. The big. old-fashioned lobby was almost desert ed. A few traveling salesmen were sit ting at the writing table, or else swap ping yarns by the big entering log fire. No sign of Steteusou, though. I was about to leave to try my luck elsewhere, when, hanging on the hat rack at the entrance to the dining room, I spied the brown leather bag. For half an hour I sat with my eyes glued to that bag. Then Stecnson came sauntering into the dining room. He picked up bis bag and, after glancing curiously around the lobby, strolled to ' the desk, got n key from the night clerk and departed in the elevator. I promptly went to the desk and awung the register around. The last name on the register was Stetson. As no Stevenson had registered. I concluded he preferred to use this new name but ,whj If his purpose was legitimate! The clerk looked suspiciously at me rm I mutually read J. J. Stetson, room S.Ui. iptSJfl.
