The manner in 'which Dr. Walter Keeuo Wllkins came Into possession of the rope with which he hanged himself In the bathroom of the Nassau county jail here last night was the subject of an Investigation begun here today by Charles R. Weeks, district attorney: Walter It. Jones, acting coroner, and other county officials. Doctor'Wllklns, convicted last Friday as the slayer of his wife, Julia, wag to hare been sen tenced tomorrow to death in tho elec tric chair at Sing Sing prison. .Every precaution had been taken to prevent Doctor Wllkins from obtaining anything with which be might attempt suicide and his jailers were unable to explain how he came Into possession of the rope, which was new. It was Im possible for anyone from the outside to throw the rope to the prisoner, for his cell contnlned no windows. The bath room where Doctor Wllkins ended his life also was without windows, A search of hardware stores and other places where rope is sold was to be made today In nn effort to trace the purchaser. It is said Doctor AVilklus had not left his cell during the day and that he had no visitors. Alo that bo had been thoroughly seached Saturday. One of the three letters written by Doctor Wilkius just before he ended his life declared tbnt he wns Innocent. Another addressed to Sheriff ThlneaK Seaman and requested thnt $G0 In his clothes be used to have his body cre mated. Mrs. Julia Wllkins, of whose murder her husband whs connected, was beaten to death on the night of February 27 last in the driveway of her Long Beach home, her skull fractured by a hammer and a piece of lend pipe. She had struggled for her life. Doctor Wllkins Informed the authorities that both be and his Wife had been attacked by three burglars. The aged physician was still alive when he was cut dirwn by attendants, and physicians, workpd over him for a half hour before the death he had sought came to him. Doctor Wllkins's neck was broken. The doctor had spent the entire, nfter noon writing his letter of self-vindication and two other letters giving direc tions for the disposal of his body and the care of several pets to which he was greatly nttnehed. "Rather than be driven across the ttate of New York by Carmen Hunt (Nassau county detective) and delivered up to Sing Sing Prison," he wrote In the first letter, "I prefer to be my own executioner. Resides, it will save Justice Manning from looking Into mv face when he tells me I hare had a fair trial. "I am absolutely innocent of this crime which the Indictment charges me with." This letter was ten pages long ami was addressed to J. P. Healey, of Brooklyn, nn acquaintance of Doctor wiiKins. Tlie second 'letter was ad dressed to Mrs. niUnbeth Muller. formerly n housekeeper for the Wil kinses who now lives at Monticello, N. Y. Doctor Wllkins requests'lier to see that his pets are well taken care of. Five alleged negro voodoo worshipers, held In San Severino prison, at Matan ias, on a charge of complicity In the murder ofa little girl, were shot and killed last'nigbt by soldiers when they attempted to escape while being re moved from, the prison to a place of greater safety after a mob had at tempted to storm the castle for the pur pose of lynching the prisoners, accord ing to a special telephone message from that city shortly after midnight. Two members of the mob were killed and eleven injured when the soldiers fired on the would-be lynchers a couple of hours earlier. Matanzaa is said to be greatly excited and further trouble is feared.
