Operations In both sections when com pleted will provide accommodations for at least 700 families. Resumption of activities by the build ers and the exodus of hundreds of fam ilies to the suburbs, It is believed, will go a long -way toward relieving the shortage of Rouses and put an end to .real estate speculation on such whole sale lines. In West Philadelphia there is every indication that the building boom will continuo for some time, regardless of the persistent rumors of high cost of materials. Twoscore of two-story dwellings are being erected at Slxty-sccond and Sixty third streets and Osage avenue. Just two blocks way the neighborhood of Sixtieth and Locust streets is the center of much activity. Four apartment bouses and stores arc going up on the west side of Sixtieth street at this point. On the east side of Sixtieth street from Chancellor to Locust six stores and three-story anartments arr helm- 1 erected and six mora stores and apart ments are in course of construction in the block from Locust to Irving streets. On Sixtieth street below Spruce, one block below, four more three-story apartments and stores are being erect ed. Eleven apartments and stores arc In course of construction on Sixtieth .street below Pine and at Sixtieth and ' Larchwood avenue, a short distance away, six more apartments and stores aro going up. In the northeast several hundred houses are in course of construction in Logan, Lawndalc and along the Hoose- relt Boulevard. In addition to these activities, builders are planning to erect several hundred homes on a tract in Ovcrbrook beginning in August. One" builder in the northeast section has several hundred homes which he declares he will neither rent nor sell until September. In Wst Philadelphia, where specu lation resulted in the ejection of hun dreds of tenants from their homes, a big change has been brought about. Several speculators who bought prop erties on "shoe string" investments have come to grief and the homes were returned to the original owner. "He was the best husband that ever lived. Our married life of eighteen years was ideal." In this wise Mrs. Teres Menvhart Baird, of Richmond Hill, L. I., re sponded to the devotion of her deceased husband, Major Charles G. Baird, United States Signal Corps, who died nt Tours, France, last April. In his will, admitted to probate yes terday, the major said of her: "She is the most perfect woman I ever saw, heard of or knew of." The will, disposing of a 5200,000 es tate, Included in its provisions his mother, Mrs. Jane Bnird, who lives at 2328 South Carlisle street. A son of this marriage of "perfect love" and the only child, is Charles, junior, eleven years old. Mrs. Baird was born in Hungary. "But I didn't say nword against his going," she said last night. "When ho told me he was needed I said : 'Your country and my country are nt war, but I owe everything to the land of my adoption, because it gave me you. Never have I beeu so happy in nny other land. " Major Baird was a telegrapher and division operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He had nerved as a sergeant through the Philippine campaign. He was commissioned major in November, 1017, and sent abroad in January of 101S. Merlon Playgrounds Opened Lower Merlon township's three play grounds wero officially opened yester day at Ardmore, Bala and Bryn Mawr. The grounds at Ardmore are the largest of the three. Kdwin S. ELPSODUCTO MORE PAY FOR WAR VICTIMS Society Plans to Make Fight for Dis abled Soldiers Better pay for disabled service men who. aro undergoing vocational training and for the totally disabled 'for whom such training is impossible, is the aim of the Association of Disabled Sailors, Soldiers and Mnrincs which met last night at 1302 Pine street to discuss plans for its fight. The association, which was formed about a week ago, has already enlisted the aid of Congressman Darrow. A bill now before Congress provided many improvements in the method of hand ling wounded and disabled service men, but the compensation provided in that bill la not considered sufficient. Only $75 a month is provided for single men and ?90 for married men, whereas the association believes that $00 for all single men, $123 for all married men and $10 for each child would be a more adequate scale. Congressman Darrow has agreed to Introduce an amendment to this effect. 9h9 tm STORE CLOSES T lf W f at 5 r. si. M i 1 J.9c -" m bi I.
