HILTON, RICHARD H. (13:238:), Co. M,
::8th Infantry.
FOR conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above
and beyond the call of duty in action with the
enemy at Brancourt, France, :: October, :o:8.
While Sergeant Hilton's company was advanc
ing thru the Village of Brancourt, it was held up
by intense enfilading fire from a machine gun.
Discovering that the fire came from a machine-gun
nest in a shell hole at the edge of the town,
Sergeant Hilton, accompanied by a few other
soldiers, but well in advance of them, pressed on
toward this position, firing ivith his rifle until his
ammunition was exhausted and then with his pistol,
killing six of the enemy and capturing ten. In the
course of this daring exploit, Sergeant Hilton re
ceived a wound from a bursting shell which re
sulted in the loss of his arm.
