He and that Soldier, n mnn named Murphy, later rescued a number of wounded men under machine gun fire. Murphy was killed. Among the men Winkle brought In was a lieutenant. The oftlcer begged for a cigarette, smoked half of It and died Uefore he succeeded In bringing In the lleutcnnnt Winkle was wounded In a bajonet fight with a German. Winkle was wounded In the left leg at Nortllles, but ream red In time to go Into action at Verdun. He was gassed at the Argonne. After that fight he was sent to the rear In a small am bulance.
