PROPOSALS
New York, Aug B.
The stock market today showed an Irregular tone, with frequent
variations between strength and weakness, and leading stocks generally
ended the day with some amount of decline. Most Interest was again
attached to' the trading In United States Steel common, which was
offered at the opening In large amounts, but after a loss of more than 1
point found support and moved back very close to yesterday's highest
price.
After these movements that stock, ns well as nearly all the leading
Issues, became Intensely dull, with a sagging movement near the close,
and It was Insisted by some of those concerned In the trading that the
flurry yesterday and most of the buying today consisted almost wholly
of covering of shorts.
Other steep Industrials followed United States Steel common closely,
Baldwin Locomotive dropped more than 1 point, and then rallying, and
similar movements were noted In Republic Iron and Steel and Bethlehem
Steel "B."
Mexican Peti oleum responded to the favorable annual report with an
advance of more than 1 point, but reacted in the later trading.
A number of specialties were forced Into prominence. General Motors
being bought by Interests representing control and advancing 5 points to
67, and Columbia Gas made a gain of 3 points In the forenoon on tha
statement that the company had brought In a new well yielding mora
than 2000 barrels a day.
Nearly all business in the bond market continued confined to the
Liberty Loan issues, with the i'Aa ranging from 99.96 to 100. The 4its
sold at 93.28 to 95 04 and the second 4s were traded In at 93.B0 to 93.64.

There was a good business on the Curb during the first hour, but

ing continued liquidation by some of the unfortunates who had been
Induced to buy the stock around 10.
Other oil stocks were fiulet, with Pierce Oil selling at 17 and lfii.
The strength in General Motors on the exchange had an Influence
In the trading in Chevrolet, which ranged from 137V4 to 140. United
Motor opened at 33, but sold off to 32N, and some realizing.
American Tobacco rights were traded In at 4U.
There was a fair amount of business in Aetna Explosives, which,
after dropping from 13V4 to 13, made a slight rally. Burns Brothers Ice

New Y'ork, Aug 6.
A good dial of excitement attended '
the trading In the cotton market today ,
and high prices for the movement and
the season were established. The great
est activity ws In October and Decem
ber, but there were sensational advances
all along the line. For a time It was a
wild market. B
There was buying attributed to the
coiering of short contracts that had
been sold before the publication of the
condition report of the Federal Depart
ment of Agricultural. Further favor
able war news and bad advices from
the belt were the factors.
Demand in the early market was much
less aggressive than yesterday and
seemed to be easily supplied by local and
outside selling based on the rain pros
pects. The market socn steadied after the
first hour. Later weather advices made
It look as though the tropical disturb
ance would reach the east Gulf coast,
but Mississippi. Texas and the western
belt forecast for dry weather, except
potslble showers in the Texas coast,
was a disappointment to early sellers.
Thre was also good buying for Liver
pool and continental account, arid prices
advanced rapidly, December contracts,
n fact, made new high ground for the
movement during the morning, selling
at 28.05, while the general list showed
net gains of some 40 to 58 point?.
