The stock market today showed an Irregular tone, with frequent variations between strength and weakness, and leading stocks generally ended the day with some amount of decline. Most Interest was again attached to' the trading In United States Steel common, which was offered at the opening In large amounts, but after a loss of more than 1 point found support and moved back very close to yesterday's highest price. After these movements that stock, ns well as nearly all the leading Issues, became Intensely dull, with a sagging movement near the close, and It was Insisted by some of those concerned In the trading that the flurry yesterday and most of the buying today consisted almost wholly of covering of shorts. Other steep Industrials followed United States Steel common closely, Baldwin Locomotive dropped more than 1 point, and then rallying, and similar movements were noted In Republic Iron and Steel and Bethlehem Steel "B." Mexican Peti oleum responded to the favorable annual report with an advance of more than 1 point, but reacted in the later trading. A number of specialties were forced Into prominence. General Motors being bought by Interests representing control and advancing 5 points to 67, and Columbia Gas made a gain of 3 points In the forenoon on tha statement that the company had brought In a new well yielding mora than 2000 barrels a day. Nearly all business in the bond market continued confined to the Liberty Loan issues, with the i'Aa ranging from 99.96 to 100. A good dial of excitement attended ' the trading In the cotton market today , and high prices for the movement and the season were established. The great est activity ws In October and Decem ber, but there were sensational advances all along the line. For a time It was a wild market. B There was buying attributed to the coiering of short contracts that had been sold before the publication of the condition report of the Federal Depart ment of Agricultural. Further favor able war news and bad advices from the belt were the factors. Demand in the early market was much less aggressive than yesterday and seemed to be easily supplied by local and outside selling based on the rain pros pects. The market socn steadied after the first hour. Later weather advices made It look as though the tropical disturb ance would reach the east Gulf coast, but Mississippi. Texas and the western belt forecast for dry weather, except potslble showers in the Texas coast, was a disappointment to early sellers. Thre was also good buying for Liver pool and continental account, arid prices advanced rapidly, December contracts, n fact, made new high ground for the movement during the morning, selling at 28.05, while the general list showed net gains of some 40 to 58 point?.
