DON'T KEEP ICEMAN WAITING, SAYS COOKE Food Administrator Here Urges Conservation to Avoid Famine Care In the us of Ice as the only means of averting an Ice famine this summer was urged today by Jay Cooke, food administrator for Philadelphia. At present, Mr. Cooke said, stored Ice Is short 50,000 tons of the normal amount. "I desire to emphasize to the people of Philadelphia the necessity for con serving Ice this year ; trfere must be ma terial saving or the public will suffer," he said. Drug stores and other places where beverages are served are asked to use a minimum of Ice In cooling. Hotels and restaurants are also asked to cut down on the alsh use of Ice In serving Clams, grapefruit and other Iced dishes. "Some practical suggestions to house holders may not be out of place." Mr. Cooke said. "The Iceman should not be kent waiting at the door while hi wagon stands In the sun The Ice It contains Is melting fast. The average Ice wagon drlxer, If he loHt minute for each pa tron, would lose three hours In a day nr.d perhaps a ton of Ice. "In a well-filled Ice chamber Ice melts more slowly than when partly filled Also the householder is saxtng money and Ice who buys In quantities as large he his refrigerator will hold and less fre quently. A small piece costs more and li less valuable for refrigeration than a la.B-e piece eery othci day. Oy buying in larger quantities and less frequently I Is saving to the deaier an I the cost of dellery Is reduced. All of these things result In an effectual saving of Ice. "Milk, vegetables, fruits and other foods should not be placed In the same compartment with the Ice. They Intro duce heat directly on the Ice and the frequent opening of the Ice chamber WISE HOUSEHOLDERS ORDERING COAL NOW No Need to Stimulate Buying Campaign Here, Says Fuel Administrator The United States fuel administration designated the first week In June "coal week" and "fuel buying week," and In structed Federal fuel administrators of the several States to prosecute cam paigns to stimulate coal buying to the end that supplies may be laid In during the summer against a shortage next win ter.
