Many of Those Who Put Out Short Lines on
New York Exchange Yesterday Are
Good Purchasers Today
NEW YOItK. Jan. 9.
There wore plenty of indications In tills morning's stock market trad
Ins that security values have been stabilized and that the situation gen
erally Is favorable to the long side. There was continued short selling,
chiefly by Iho Wall street crowd that continued to work for a reaction,
iut the Bales from this source were absorbed without trouble and many
of those who had put not short lines yesterday were nmong the most
urgent buyers today.
A feature of the trading was another violent advance In American
Tobacco, which rose nearly 10 points to 165, bringing Its price back tu
above the level prevailing when It was first proposed to Issue new stock.
The Mexican stocks wero nctlve and strong also, with buying of those
Issues based to an extent on a confident belief that operations of American-owned
properties over the border will be protected to tho full extent
from now on.
Mexican Petroleum, in which there has been constant accumulation
for somo time, made an advanco of 4 points to 84tJ, and American Smell
ing moved up 1H, crossing 79.
There was heavy trading In United Ftates Steel common all through
tho forenoon, that stock showing a gain nf ti, with sales at 95. Beth
lehem Steel "II" advanced 1 to S0V4, and other steel Industrials made
gains of from 1 to 2 points.
Heading and Union Pacific wero tho most prominent features In the
railway group, both making good gains. Tho Marine Issues wero alio
uctivc and strong, with Atlantic Gulf nnd West Indies moving up 3
point sto 101, and Marino preferred advancing S points to S854.
Liberty Bonds were steady, without special change In prices.
