Russia
Old Nicholas, ths former Czar, Is llh
a "chauff" without a car; he's Ilk
cop without a club; he's like a bear
that's lost her cub. There neer was
a Czar before who had such trouble
from a war, and ecr since he lost his
Job his land has wrestled with the
mob. From Inside Btrlfe and outside
stress old TtusMa BUrely Is a mess.
Tor, while the Moujlks loudly moo and
rail against the ruling- few, the hostile
cohorts of the Hun have cot Us army
on the run; It H a Rushln' army now,
that's rushln' backwards to Moscow.
Who knows? Perhaps old Petrograd
again may bear the name It had until
a few short years ago when Kaiser Bill
became Us foe, for flcelnc Russians
may depart and leae It for a German
mart. Unless they toon stand up and
fght, the Germans on that town will
light, and gho It back Its German
name St. Petersburg, O what a shame!

Unique Presentation
The men of the fire department of a
western town decided on the occasion
of his birthday to present to their
chief a 'fine ax. Elaborate prepaia

in a ceremonial manner, and there
was to he a presentation speech. The
eloquent address framed cost the
speaker many houri of mental toil.
The' spokesman opened his mouth,
but words came not. lie looked at the
chief, at the floor, at the colling;, then
made a wide gesture, t'ae a gulp, and
paid:
"Here's your ax."
The chief, who had arisen, gae him
one look of dumb consternation, nnd
rejoined:
"Goah! la that the ax?"

"I don't eeo any sense In referring
to the wisdom of Solomon," said the
man, smartly, "Ho had a thousand
wives."
"Yes," answered the woman, tartly,
