Although there appeared to be a good
-supply at the opening of tha Cotton Ex
charge, tho demand took all the offerings
and prices advanced rnther sharply. The
tone was firm, July moving up G points and
other months 8 to 18 points.
Spot houses, Liverpool and Interests usu
ally acting for Important financial houses
old, but room traders, Wall street and
commission houses wero free buyers.
Further strength developed later In the
forenoon as buying continued large. July
and October closed 33 points above yester
day's close and December ended up 34
points.
No attention was given to Improved crop
weather conditions. Tho map showed pre
cipitation In Tennessee, North Carolina and
Arkansas, with conditions generally cloudy
and more rain Indicated. Temperatures
were about normal.
Cotton receipts at the ports for the day
were estimated at 8000 bales, compared

FINANCIAL NEWS
MUCH IRREGULARITY IN MOVEMENTS
OF PRICES IN WALL STREET TRADING
Speculative' Element on Floor Works for Reaction,
Offering Stocks Like Steel Common at Concessions.
Industrial Alcohol at New High Mark
High Points in Today's Financial News
Much irregularity in prices of stocks in New York, Curb trading brisk,
with upward movements .Wheat, corn and cotton higher. Spanish and
Russian exchange slightly lower in foreign exchange market. Dank clearings
for week gained 17 per cent. New York bank statement showed increases
in actual and average loans, with decreases in deposits and surplus. United
States Steel Corporation unfilled orders on May 31 more than 296,000 torn
smaller than at tho end of April.
' NEW YOnK, Juno 9.
There was a good deal of Irregularity about stock market operations In
tho two hours of trailing, with tho speculative clement on tlio floor working
for a reaction and offorlng stocks like United States Steel common at moderato
concessions. They based their opinions to somo extent on tho statements
mado In tho morning papers of the unsatisfactory aggregate of tho Government
bond subscription so far received.
Vhllo they mado a few of tho recent market leaders yield slightly, aggressive
buying was noted In various other groups. American Sugar Refining continued
Its upward movement, crossing 128 and selling at a new high record for the year.
Around the end of the first hour thoro was a vigorous bullish demonstration
in tho motor stocks, on which General Motors advanced 8 points to 112 and
Studebakcr roso from 79 to 8414. Tho belief provalled that this movement
was in connection with progress that has been made in arranging for a natural
consolidation of Genoral Motors and Choyrolot, and It was assumed In eomo
important quarters that other Important motor companies will bo Included
In this consolidation.
Western houses turned their attention to tho railroad stocks in tho last
half of tho forenoon, buying many of tho leading railway issues on a fairly
largo scale, but tho transactions made did not represent In any way tho volume
of buying ordors standing on tho brokcra' books In theso (Hocks.
Industrial Alcohol commanded attention for a ttmo because of its ndvanco
from 16G14 to tho new high record of 170. Distillers' Securities wao forced
Into public attontlon at tho same time by pool manipulation, on which It was
moved up from 21 to 28?i, but no ono regarded tho trading In Distillers
earnestly.
Thero was a fair business in the bond market, but without spoclal change
In prices in leading lssuos. Anglo-French Es wero agatn traded In at 93 and
93M. Missouri Pacirto 4a sold at 61 and 60.

NEW YORK, Juno 9.
A greater dogreo of strength was shown on tho Droad Street Curb in tho
half day's business than has boen notod thoro in a long porlod. Group after
group of stocks devclopod pronouncod activity, with buying orders coming from
many quarters, and vlgorousadvances wero in order in nearly everything traded
in. Air Reduction, which opened at 91, advanced to tho new high record of
97, Unltod Motors advanced from 26 to 28U and Chovrolet moved up from
97 to 100, a gain of 5 points from yesterday's low flguro.
Tho nctlvlty in tho motor stocks was based on tho understanding that now

A substantial Increase In shipments of

of Information. The total for May of this
year was 6,917,626 tons, an Increase of
1,825,226 tons over April and a gain of
1,3(9,626 tons as compared with May of
last year. This brings tho total shipments
for the Ave months ending with May up to
30,618,066 tons, an Increase of 2,833,368 over
tho total for the corresponding period In

While the detailed figures of the amount
of coal carried by the different anthracite

helpful to tho rnarket.

Compete for Leadership.
See Higher Prices
NEW YORK, June 9.
Important advances were again the or
der In the steel market during the last
week, with pig Iron and scrap material com
peting for tho leadership. Predictions of
furthtr upturns In these branches of the
trade mado In this column a week ago were
fulfilled with a vim.
In pig Iron the tone has been stronger
than at any time heretofore. And sales
In all of several hundred thousand tons
have been mado, according to the best esti
mates In the trade. The feature of tho
market has been tho sharp advance of
Bessemer Iron In Pittsburgh, where sales
were consummated at better than $50 per
ton, and the quotation now generally asked
Is $60.96 per gross ton.
Somo sharp advances have been made
In old material duo to tho demand which
Is of sufficient proportions to take all the
offerings. Sellers are again forcing thi
buyers to come to them with their needs
Leading steel and Iron Jnterests are
emphatic In stating that the upward move
ment In both these branches of trade has
not reached the apex. They base their
opinions on the fact that the demand Is
abnormally large and make the point that
so long as this condition continues prices
will move toward a higher' level,
