Anions: the largest Philadelphia firms which have been dnltiK war work and which may he expected to share In the payments to ho made from the first loan are the n.ildwln Locomotive Works, tho Ktldyatone Ammunition Corporation, the Itemlncton Arms Company, the Mldvale Steel and Ord nance Compan.v. The share of the new $200,000,000 loan to go to these firms probably wlll'ieach $30,000,000. The Mldvale Steel and Ordnance Company has received Allied war orders exceeding $100,000,000. Its Immediate share ot the United States loan may reach $12,000,000 to $16,000,600. The ilu Pont Company has furnished ex plosives far in excess of $300,000,000 since the war beiran, and Its proportionate pharn of the new paincnt may easily reach $40, 000.000. The Hemlngton Arms plant, at Kddystone. has received orders for probably $200,000, 000 worth of munitions. lm share of the caih should, therefore, be about $25,000,000. Ilethlehem Steel, the largest single maker of guns nnd large steel products for the Allies, has had orders totaling betwe-n $300,000,000 nnd $400,000,000. Its share of the loan may be almost $40,009,000. Tho Ttoebllng plant at Trenton, the Brill car works, the Standard Holler Hearing Company nnd scutes ot smaller plants In this vicinity have nhared In the allied war oiders. Their shares In Ihe $200,000,000 are difficult to estimate, tint, of course, will be small compared to the amounts distributed among the huge concerns. The munition business has been conducted with more secrecy than the making of moonshine whisky, and may be said to bo equally tunning anil romantic. Although there has been much talk that the Allies have recently caught up in their race for Inunltlons and would not need the assistance of the American plants to a great extent, the assurance of tlnanclal as sistance from the I'nlted States makes It certain that the war orders will continue And the requirements ot this country Itself to equip a great army nnd enlatged navy will give the inunltlons makers more work than they need for months and per haps earn to come. Philadelphia will not suffer Industrially or financially because of the I'nlted Stales' entrance Into the war. The Philadelphia district doubtless leads all the country in lis ability to furnish the Implements of war and Ihe auxiliary sup plies needed, It would be easier to name tho things this city cannot do than to item ize the things It can do. Philadelphia can make more uniforms, hats, underclothes, socks nnd small sup plies than any other center, and it Is one ot the best equipped to supply the heavy machinery for big gun making;, as well as the finest Instruments nnd apparatus used In shell firing and army and navy maneu vering. The Delaware Itlver hanks have a great er shipbuilding capacity than any other district In the world, both for commercial and war vessels. The equipment of the Philadelphia Navy Yard to build battle ships adds greatly to the district's ca pacity. Medical supplies, leather goods and canned goods nre a few other necessities of ,i nation at war which this city can furnish And the agricultural districts of Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey, of which this city is the natural center, are among tho country's most fertile spots. The district within n tadlus of forty miles could easily feed Iteelf without outside aid, while furnishing enough munitions and gen eial supplies to keep the country In fight luff shape Indefinitely. This, of course, assumes that suppllen of raw material for manufacturing would be Imported hete. Philadelphia Is doubtless the most valu able asset the nation possesses at this time.
