The stock market wan active nnd liYcmilnr nil throuRh the day, with the

by the news of the fictlvltlca of the German raider In the southern seni. The
first of this news enmo on the Street Just before the opening nnd was uod
at the hcglnnlnR of business ns n renson for putting out fresh lines of shorlM,
caualnK substhntlnl declines In mnny Issues.
Within n few minutes, however, It developed thnt the ilenmnd for stocks
had broadened materially nnd nil the offerings were easily nbsorbed. When It
became apparent Hint the buying power hnd Incrcnscd the bear operations
quickly ceased .nnd In the rest of the first hour market movements consisted of
vigorous ndvnnccs.
fulled Stolen Steel common led the wny for the general list on both the
rfffsilons nnd upturn. After selling down 1i to 113'i It quickly rose to
115, but nfter the buying orders were filled the market for thl3 leader flattened
out and It was ngnln subjected to bear nttneks, to which It yielded about 2
points In the last half of the day.
There were many wldo price movements In specialties. Industrial Alcohol,
after selling at 127, roso to 130, from which It quickly dropped to 123. The
motor stocks wcro In better demand than they have been for months. .Max
well Motors was one of the strongest features, advancing more thnn 6 points
to nbmo 16H4 General Motors roso 1 to 120 and Htudebaker 2V5 to 110'i.
These gains, however, were materially reduced later In the day.
The strength In the motor stocks, while attributed wholly to covering of
ihorts, could be traced directly to the Influence of the Interest shown In the
motor industrials nt the current exhibitions, which furnished evidence that the
demand for the output of the popular companies Is growing steadily In volume
and gives a promise at continued largo profits.
The bond market showed Increased strength all through the day, with the
gilt-edged Issues In sennt supply and hard to obtain. There vvero somo latge
transactions in United Kingdom 5'4 per cent year notes nt 37 and 87V St.
Imls and San Francisco Issues were active at moderate udvances, nnd there was
a good demand for Wheeling and Lake Krle 4s. which rose from 70T to 804.

CURB DEVELOPS GREATER ACTIVITY;
MANY GOOD GAINS ARE RECORDED

The Curb market showed n strong tone during the forenoon, when there
was Increahcd activity In many of the Industrial Issues, us well as In the oil and
motor shares. The maikct seemed to recover from Its waiting disposition and
there was n good demand again from outside Interests and representatives of
control of somo of the most Important coiporntlons.
The widest movement was In Chevrolet, which moved up from 111 to US,
and was followed by United Motor, which roso from 1,1 to -IB. There was trading
In Continental Motors common from I0 to 40 and the prefencd stock sold
at OSH to 391$.
Tho sugar stocks, whlo.li lately appeared on the Curb, vvero nlso active and
atrong, with Central Sugnr selling nt 30 and tho preferred nt 024, while United
Sugar sold at 3fl. Sunta Cecelia common sold nt 28 nnd the preferred nt CI
to 614
Miilvnlc Steel ranged during tho greater part of tho titty from 03 to C--'!;.
Zinc Concentrating sold nt Iff !,&. Osago Oil was active nnd strong, ndvnnclng
from 8s. to 9'i, and Oklahoma Producing sold at 12?i to 13'4. Cosdcn & Co.
ex rights was traded In at 15H to 15.
The mining stocks wcie Irregular. Magma opened nt fi2 and dropped to
604, and United Verde Intension sold at 384 to 38 li.
