that an Upward movement cannot be expected until time ban been allowed for the

order te realize profits, during the laat few week.
Apparently thla aecondary distribution waa expected to be made at price
determined by the bear Intertita, and thla expectation encouraged the pro

proceeded with thla work until a large and uneaay ahort Interest rum been cre

This document presented the largest earnings In the record of the company
for public conlderatlon. Net enrnlngs Increased more than 17.000,000 during the

The railroad stocks as a group responded to the showing made In this report,
with advances ot around 2 points. Union 1'aclftc, which had sold close to ISO.

NKW YOntC. Oct. 4. The cotton mar
ket at the opening this morning was active
and Irregular, with first prices from J to
1( points net higher. The opening feature
was a big buying -order In January, partly
attributed to cohering ot hedges by south
ern spot! houses. '
Local offerings were heavy on the ad
vance, and subsequent deliveries showed
less strength than the near positions.
Liverpool's firmness was attributed to
less hedge selling and a ready absorption
of such pressure when It occurred.
Wall street was a moderate buyer at the
start, but offerings Increased materially, and
at the end or the first fifteen minutes the
market waa off about 13 points from top on
January, although still halt a dozen points
over last night's close, with Lharpool a
fair seller.
The market became very firm late In the
morning, Reports of unfavorable weather
In ths eastern belt and talk of heavy Octo
ber exports seemed to stimulate the buy
ing. Spot orders were uncovered, as prices
worked above 17c for January and all de
liveries made new high records, with active
months selling 2! to 25 points net higher
shortly after midday.
Offerings then became rather more liberal
and fluctuations early In the noon hour wire
somewhat Irregular.
The receipts of cotton at the porta for
the day were .estimated at -45,000 bales,
compared with 61,087 bales last week,
4 4,2 J bales last year and 21,791 bales
in isi4.
