OONGlltLS STARRED . IN NEW PHOTODRAMAS Cmi Huff, Talmadge and Alli son Are. Seen at Prominent Film Theaters By the Fheteplay Editor AMMkretftlr noOita can down the movies Meet tradition belief that alt leading women mint be younr glrla, It came In With Marr rickford. and It did not go out i with the Glahes, Van Marsh, Mary Miles Winter, Louise Huff or any of the other petty little things. It persists In the new Famous Players release. "The Reward of Patience," by Shannon Fife, featuring Miss Huff, which entertained Stanley audiences yesterday. Fortunately, Director Robert O, Vlgnola .and Author Fife understand lust what young girls can do before the camera, and what they can't 80 the result ts an attractive photoplay, not too Intricate In the plot handling, and bulwarked by some fetching rural scenery, with waterfalls and country sward prominent. Miss Huff, who used to Lubln, acts the part of a Quaker maid daintily. Lottie rickford brings vivacity to a small role, and there are flashes of celluloid humor that add Impetus to the proceedings. One of these Is the retort of a small pupil I when asked by Patience who led the chil dren of Israel Into Canaan. "I didn't; we only moved hers from Iowa last week." he rejoins. The continuity Is good also ; but why, Mr. Vlgnola, permit a telegram to be printed In large display type? Why not ' typewritten T The Fine Arts Company has exumed a type absolutely new to the screen. He Is !Adam Buzzard, a worthy whose name sym bolizes his hunger for scandal In society which he disposes of to a "chatty" maga tlne. All this, and much more, happens In The Social Secretary," which Is at the Arcadia. The adroitness with which ster eotyped situations and characters have been ' given new Interest by the authors, Anita Loos and John Emerson, Is really remark able. The picture Is delightfully droll, with moments of tensity; even during the "emot ing" the play rather has Its tongue in Its cheek: Exquisite camera work and the intelligent beauty of Norma Talmadge make ' the feature one that should be booked by 1 all exhibitors. y Filmed novels are not always. Indeed hardly ever, successful. But It must be admitted that "Mister 44," a Metro at the Regent and "Victoria tho latter half of this week. Is exceptional. It tells a romantlo but plausible tale with grace and vividness ; has been staged amid locations of the Im pressive sort which Henry Otto, the director, disclosed In his "Undine" and Is agreeably. If not wonderfully, played by Harold Lock wood and May Allison. The source of the drama was E. J. Rath's book of the same name. a Mr. Otto geta a black mark along with Mr. Vlgnola for one strange error In his leaders; the tenses are mixed. But he also gets a good mark for his development of a curtaln-Uke fade-out and for his handling of vistas and shadows. The beauty of broad waters, the power of great trees, are never lost on him or his camera man. Theatrical Baedeker BROAD "TUB TWO JANES." with narrr Fleher.
