Johnston, on Jhe other hand, was forced to extend himself to -win froin Dean Mathey, of Cranford, N. J. Johnston's play In the first two sets was erratic, as he continually had trouble with his service. The first set was won by the Callfornlan, but not until every game save one had gone to deuce a number of times, Mathey captured the second set more through Johnston's errors than through any brilliant play on his part In the two final seta, however, the former champion displayed some of his true form, and while Mathey'a play also Improved, until the match de veloped Into the best of the tournament, yet the smashing tactics of the Callfornlan I proved too much for the easterner and ha ' was forced down to defeat First race, three-year-old and upward, sell Inc. 6 furlonts Palanquin. Play Inc Cornell with only two days' practice t The new coach must be craxyl Anyway, they packed up and departed on what they thought would be a journey with a ter rible end Surprise Sprung That football game Is history now, but It will bear repeating. TV an-J played Cornell off Its feet rushed tho ball alt 0 er the field, but fumbles at critical times prevented scores. As It was, the count waa 0 to 0. with only a couple of minutes to play, when Cornell scored on a drop kick and won, J to 0 That one game made Folwell and TV and J. and he is dotng the same thing at Penn. The lied and Blue candidates have done good work this week, nut It is too early to get a lino -on them. All of ths tnen played last year, but the new coach did not see them In action, po that cannot be held against them . Its lucky FolwelJ did not see the fayette disaster But there li a different spirit among the men now, and tho losers last year haia a good Chance to turn over a new leaf. ryn 00; Fayette County Fair Races Off DAWSON. Season Opens Today Anyway, Penn will open the football sea son today at 3 p. m. at Newtown Square, near the George School. A game will be played on the square and all the, actors will be given a chance to act It will not be a. regular game just a practice scrim mage to give the boys a taste ot real root ball a couple of woeks before they get it as a steady diet And as the battle will be staged among the trees some place near tanghome. a large crowd ot ooaohss and other substitutes will use up the space on the side lines. The announcement that a game would be played today came aa a big surprise, but It Is characteristic of Bob Folwell. Al though tha men have been practicing only since Monday he wants to aee what they can do without waiting until September 30. The players know but three or four formations. Including one forward pass, nnd they will be used over and over until they are perfect Then, If things go along sat isfactorily It would not be at all surprising to learn that another game will be played next Saturday. ' Folwell Is a fast worker. He alao Is a hard worker and before ho ts with a team very long he has the players thinking the same as he. This early jiractlce game stuff Is one, of his usual stunts, but lie seldom picks out such soft opponents. When Folwell went to -Washington and Jefferson for the first time lie found the football team in terrible shape. Early prac tice had been called, but It rained steadily for two weeks and the football field was good for nothing but submarine maneuvers. All of tho other vacant spots also were under water and the players were having a n)cs time loafing around town and prais ing the food at the training table. Folwell stopped this on the very first day. He dlscoered a nice dry spot on the campus and chased the squad out to practice. They worked a couple of, days on signals, but no rough work was In dulged in. It was a sad looking crowd. Enter, a Challenge At the end of the second day's practice the manager received a telegram from Cornell. A team scheduled to appear at Ithaca cancelled and TV. and J. was asked to fill In. Folwell was in the dressing room when the message arrived. 116 asked the players what they thought of It "Can't be done," they said. "We can't go up aganlst that crowd with only two days' practice. They'd wallop us all over the field and trim us a million to nothing. They have a terrible nerve to ask us to come up." Think so?" queried Folwell. "Well, I Veterans In, Line-up ,Hennlng and Nelll, who played ths mart positions last year, hava not yet arrived at Lnnghorne and their plaoes will be taken by Withcrow and Wlrkman. Most of the other positions will be filled by regulars. Lud TVray plays center!
