i Untied States Steel Corporation increased the price of steel bars $2 a

iUorthenu Price of crude oil lowered by Standard Oil Company of Louisiana
ttnd Prairie Oil Company. Price of bar silver unchanged in New York and
London. July earnings of eastern railroads suffered through the movement
of troops to the Mexican border and the stormy weather conditions u part of
the month. American Coal Company, of Birmingham, Ala., filed a voluntary
pttilion in bankruptcy.
NEW YOniC, Aug. 2.
' Henry Ford does not scorn to bo making any efforts in tho motor world to
maintain peaceful operations, judging by tho market results of the announcement
made yesterday of tho cut In tho price of the Ford product. From the tlmo tho
ntxt schedule was published bears have been active in raiding tho motor stocks)
en the floor of tho Exchange.
There was stubborn support to tho bear attacks at the start, but the offerings
of short stocks increased in volunio and were accompnnied by. statements of weak
long accounts hanging over tho market.
It is part of tho gossip of the board that ono lino of GO.OOO shares of Willys
Overland had been taken over at 50. Tho real weakness in the motor stocks sit
uation, however, is duo to tho fact that theso Issues liavo never had any sub
stantial friends, either in tho speculative clement or in banking circles.
Thcso attacks were predicted at tho end of last week and apparently tho
aggressivo bears have found somo source from which the motor stocks could bo
tUy borrowed. It is nntural that tho general list should have been Influenced by
the sharp break in tho motor Issues, as It is tho settled rule in Wall street that
colling of good stocks Is necessary, to protect accounts in whtcih stocks of a lower
class are held.
This condition was reflected by a supply of Union Taclflc after that stock had
advanced to 139;i, on which it yielded more than ono point.
An early hull movement In Marino preferred was also checked and turned
Into a decline, and in the last half of the day tho gcnoral market tone was heavy,
With Httlo attention paid to anything clso than tho movement In the Motor Btocks.

Price of Steel Bars
i'i NEW YORK, Aug. 2. Tho United States Steel Corporation has advaueed tho
price of steel bars $2 a ton. Tho deliveries covered are the last half of this year
and the first half of next year. In connection with the advance It was learned that
tho agricultural implement manufacturers arc still leading in tho buying, and it
Is not at nil unlikely that tho new prices will cause another rush to cover tho
requirements of tho various users, with those independents quoting tho 2.0c level
being swamped with inquiries. This Is expected to result In the smaller steel
companies following tho lead of the big interest.

Stormy Weather During Second Week Will Also Havo
Bad Influence on July Reports, It Is Thought;
Local Trading Quiet
It Is the frenernt opinion In financial
circles that enrnltiRfl of railroads operating
In the East will not be oa favorablo for
July, notwlth.tnndlnfr the Rood showing
made during June nnd the first half of the
year. Two i-canons aro advanced for n,
falling-oil In tho freight trafllo, Tho one
nnd most important la the demand made
by the Oovernmcnt for the transportation
of troops to tho Mexican border, and the
other, tho severe storm which prevailed
during several days of tho second week of
tho month.
It Is pointed out that, because of the hasty
dispatch of the guardsmen and supplies to
the Southwest, tho railroads wero compelled
to hold up the freight movement, as It was
necessary for them to utilize many of their
best freight locomotives to move tho heavy
troop trains. As a result thero waB a delay
for several days and In some cases as much
as a week.
A falling off In local freight and dirrtcul
tics In obtaining trade laborets has also
contributed to tho conditions which tend to
make the showing below what might have
been expected under normal conditions. Ex
port freight continues to move In as heavy
it volunio ns It has for several mont'is.
