SAYS OF AUDITORIUM
Director Declares Mayor Doesn't
Want Cheap Hall on Parkway.
Defends Expense
When asked why the plans to build a
municipal auditorium had been altered so
As to more than double the cost of con
struction. Director Datemnan, ot the De
partment of Publlo Safety, said: "Mayor
Emlth and the members of his cabinet did
not want to build a. Wg- shed between n
mag-nincont library bulldlnr and tho art
museum."
In defending the chances from a 11,500,.
000 bulldlne to one that will likely cost the
city $4,000,000 to complete the Director
added:
"It la the function of the city adminis
tration to think ahead for the people. It Is
not thinkable from the people's point of
ylvvr to vote to spend twenty millions on
the Parkway, to have It disfigured with a
building ouch as one costing a million and
m. half would be; that Is, when you compare
It with the other edifices that are to be
reoted.
"As r understand it. the people have
given their sanction to a continuing; pro.
gram of building by voting an additional
loan for the publlo library, and also by
'sanctioning the Mayor's addition of J JO,.
600 to the last loan for the auditorium.
"As I have said. I do not know the ex
aot estimates on the auditorium. But it
may be said. In a general way, that they
will run something over three million. I
take It. that a further loan, for what
ever money will be necessary, will come be
fore the people next year. In the mean
time work is expected to be begun on the
building early this fait
"I think these figures are' conservative
when the faot is taken into consideration
that the coat of the proposed original build
ing in 1111 has risen to something like
13,100,000, and further plans have been
made to Inorease the cost of the library
building."
