The Street wna surprised this morning' at the news from Washington Indicat
ing: stronger hopes of tnalntcnanco of poace relations with Mexico by the changed
Attitude of Carrahzo. Tho market had been oversold to a high degree by many
trader, both on tho floor and outside of tho Exchange In tlio last two weeks who
thought tljpy had one opportunity to get rich quick by selling Mexican stocks.
Shorts joined In a stampede this morning to get their stocks back. The crowd
f brokers in Mexican Petroleum reached hugo proportions, covering almost a
quartor of the board room floor. Every ono seemed to havo buying orders or
Were urgent as buyers for their own account. Tho stock, which closed yesterday
at 81, advanced on bids of units at a time from 93 to 101, with sales in different
parts of tho crowd at around 100 and 101 at tho samo Instant.
Then a supply appeared, but tho demand was so great that a recession to 97
wma slow. AH around tho room similar mqvements took placo, but other stocks
Hrero not nil as woll matntalnod -as Mexican Potroloum.
Maxwell Motors, which advanced 6& points to 87, fell to 82H. American Car
and foundry, aftor a 2-point advanco to BOH. dropped to E4, and Industrial
Alcohol, which oponed 3 points up at 140, dropped to 137H. Marino preferred
made & gain of 8H to 92, followed by a reaction in tho next few minutes to 89,
and Jleadlng, which mado a gain of 3 points to 98H. yielded to 96 in a short
period.
Tho buying of theso last-named stocks was almost wholly for short account,
and in oomo quarters tho Impression prevailed that the bidding up of prices ot
the op.onlng waa for tho distinct purposo of creating a market on which to sell
long stocks.
Thoi supply which came in, however, was generally woll taken, and at midday
many Issues, including Heading, United States Steel common and Marino preferred,
ranged substantially above yesterday's final prices.
United Verde Mining Pays Initial Dividend
NEW YORK, Juno 29. Tho United Vordo Extension Mining Company has do
dared an initial dividend of 60 cents per sharo on its stock, payablo August 1 to
holders of record July IE. Although tho dividend Is not designated as a quar
terly ono, it Is expected that this rato will bo repeated every three months.
Sinclair Oil Declares Initial Quarterly Dividend
NEW YORK, Juno 29. Tho Sinclair Oil and Refining Company has declared
an initial quarterly, dividend of $1.25, payablo August 10 to stock of record Au
gust 1.
Ten Per Cent. Extra Dividend for New Jersey Zinc
NEW YOIUC, June 29. Tho Now Jersey Zinc Company has declared nn extra
dividend of 10 per cent., payablo August 10 to stock of record August 1. Tho com
pany also has declared tho rogular quarterly dividend of 4 per cent, payablo Au

NEW YORK, Juno 29. Business was
small on the Cotton Exchango this morn
ing, and prices mado a partial response
to disappointing cables, showing losses of
S to 8 points, tho largest In July. Tho tone,
however, was steady and after tho call
there wero recoveries of 3 to 5 points from
the start.
Liverpool was tho only seller of July, jvlth
ono room operator tho Important seller In
all the other options. Spot houses were
conspicuous buyers, and Wall street In
terests also purchased.
Tho rally from tho opening decline car
ried active months about 2 to 3 points
above last night's closing figures, but gen
erally 'business was very quiet and later
fluctuations were particularly narrow.
The market remained quiet during the
noon hour, but hold steady with new crop
deliveries ruling about 3 to 4 points net
higher. The Norden Report made the aver
ago condition of the crop 80.4 per cent,
compared with 81.1 last month, but failed
to stimulate any fresh business or to create
any fresh sentlmentas to the probable
showing of the Government report on Sat

ket was steadier at the opening thla morn
ing. First prices were unchanged to S
points lower under scattered selling by
trada interests, but offerings were well
taken, and before the call was over De
cember contracts had sold up from 7.90 to
7.9S. The stronger tone to the stock mar
ket' and the more favorable turn in Mexi
can affairs, combined with the better tech
nical position, seemed to promote covering.

view of tlio Mexican situation was respon
sible for nelllnc in tho wheat market this

tering covering, duo to heavy showers In

prices declined below last night's close.
With tho oxceptlon ot tho rain In tho
spring whent torrltory tho weather In tho
remainder of tho bolt was favorable.
July started at $1.01 to $1.00?,, against
tl.OOi at the end yesterday nnd sold down
to Jl.H before tlio end of tho first half
hour; September was quoted nt $1.0. $4 to
$1.04, compared with $1.04 H nt tho close
yesterday and receded to $1.0394. Decem
ber ranged from $1.07 to $1.07 at tho
outset, ngalnst $1,07, yesterday's last
price, nnd fell to $1,06.
A broadfu demand was reported from
tho Continent, where reserves arc not what
they Bhould be. Freight rates from Atlantic,
ports showed further steadiness. Enormous
reserves In exporting countries, however,
are. causing foreigners to hold aloof for
the time, being.
Tho receipt at Minneapolis nnd Duluth
today were 475 cars, against 139 cars a year
ngo; at Chicago, 38 cars, compared with 11
cars; at Winnipeg, 646 cars.
July corn held woll, but other months
were a little easier. Tho weather was
ideal for tho new crop. Tho market at
Liverpool displayed strength,.

The Nassau Light nnd Power Company
of Nassau County, L. I., N. Y reports an
Increase in gross earnings of $32,786 for the
12 months ended April 30, ns compared with
last year. The net earnings are more than
6 times the Interest charges. The net
earnings have Increased 185 per cent, in
eight years.
The Savage Arms Company reports gross
sales for the 12 months ended December 31,
1915, of $1,037,603, an Increase of $373,528
as compared with the preceding year. Net
profit, after expenses, amounted to $198,312.
It was Inadvertently stated yesterday on
this page that the Baltimore and Ohio Itall
road had declared a semiannual dividend
of 3 per cent, on the common stock, restor
ing that issue to the 6 per cent, per annum
basis. The rate should have been 2 per
