The decree, dated March 3, of this year,
refers to the Baltimore canon ordering
priests to remove entirely tho "abuse" In
which dances and entertainments are used
for charity and other pious purposes, and
adds that "what was very wisely and Just
ly Ordered In the beginning, gradually com
menced to fall Into oblivion. And tho uso of
balls again flourished And even spread Into
the neighboring Dominion of CAnada."
'The decree then orders that the decisions
of the Baltimore Council we obeyed And
that "a!1 priests, secular and regular, nnd
other clerics are Absolutely forbidden to
promote or foster tho said balls, oven
though In aid of and In support of pious
WorKa or any other pious end ; moreover,
nil clerics are forbidden to bo present at
these balls If they happen to bo promoted
by laymen."
Van Oston Funeral Tomorrow
The funeral of William Van Oaten, who
was the oldest saloonkeeper In the city, and
- perhaps In the world, will be held from his
late homo and place of business. 10 North
Bth street, tomorrow afternoon nt 2 o'clock,
