The battle for tho cellar championship of the American League wilt be fought this afternoon, and It Is hoped on nil sides that the worst team will lose. A regular struggle Is looked for, with both sides confident of keeping out of the dismal swamp. The youthful athletes on Sir. Mack's ball club arrived here happy and smiling this morning, after two lovely nights and one beautiful day on the train. 'There Is nothing that makes one so Joyous and happy as spending two nights on a steeper. The hired men Just beamed through the dust, soot, cinders and coal which covered their features and bore up bravely under, tho Bhock when It was an. nounced that the train was only ono hour late. One hour meant nothing In their young lives Just then. All they wanted was some breakfast, and no one would have objected had the alleged "flyer" been but 10 minutes late. There seems to be a wave of patriotism sweeping the country. Last Saturday up In Boston they DUt on a nreDaredneax nnrarfn. I despite the fact that a couple of hundred educated young gents participated In an In tercollegiate trade meet. It almost put the highbrow matinee on the blink, but Boston Insisted on being prepared. St. Louis Is stagtnr the same act today and the town Is alt dolled up like a Chinese warship. The good old red white and blue is waiving proudly rrom everytning which It -can wave and orator's were not called on to speak last Decoration Day are preparing to spill their speeches on the slightest pro vocation. Everybody In town la expected to fall or slip Into line and the terrible struggle for the cellar championship of the American League is almost forgotten. The good cltltens can see a ball game any day, but it is seldom that they have a chance to parade before the admiring thousands lined up on the curb. The man agement of the ball club decided not to Interfere with the big event, so the big game will be put on as an added attrac tion Uter in the day. Dill' Evans and Dick Nallln, the well, known and sometimes efficient umpires, will call the fuss at 4:15 p. m., and it Is fer vently hoped that it will t finished wth out the aid of searchlight. Fielder Jones and his gang are in rare spirits today after walloping Cleveland, ytaterday, and tha game with the Athletics Is not worrying them one bit. The Mackmen, on the other paw, also are confident. Sheehan will do the twirling, and Connie s sure that he Will come through with flying colors. Up there, struggling for the pot, Each day brings on another pinch; You aro tho only guys who've got A cinch. "Fed stars responsible for (Hants' great spurt," announces nn exchange. Giving; all credit to Messrs. ICnuff, Anderson, Bnrlden, McKechnle and Iloush, we wouldn't go quite so far as to say that. There Is Dave Rob ertson, batting abovo ,330; there nro Oeorgo Burns nnd Larry Doyle, bnttlng well over ,300 ; there nro Art Fletcher and Fred Merkle, playing brilliantly and, nmong others, thcro Is Doctor Matthewson. Colonel Iko Dorgan, tho manager of Frank Mornn, wishes to propound Just ono query. "They say," remarks Ike, "that Frank hns been afraid to meet Jack Dillon. Is a man likely to bo afraid of Jack Dillon when ho has shown his willingness to meet Jack Johnson 20 rounds and to face Jess Willard? Is Dillon moro dangerous than Johnson was thrco years ago or than' Wil lard was this last March7" Thts seems to close out tho debate. "Is It on tho level Is It really true," writes a fan from n small town, "that Christy Mathewson has come back? It doesn't seem possible, considering the work he has done In tho last IS years." According to the deep lnnor feelings of several clubs that Mathewson haH met the statement clrtunlly Is truo. At leaBt they seem to havo a hunch that he has started in that general direction, at least. Colonel Cornelius McGIUlcuddy has worked wonders with a young team, nnd he mny, as quoted, win n pennant by 1917. But we doubt very much that the latter event takes place unless Connie can dis cover somo wonderful taming process to npply to several of his young pitchers. Having the stuff la one thing. Getting it over Is another. Tho four Western clubs in the National League so far have been found wanting. None of the four hns shown the stuff to earn a first division resting place. If 'there la any latent talent that has been overlooked, this Jaunt through the Bast will be In the nature of a. last stand. For If none of the v Westerners Is able to get going through June, thero will be very llttlo hope iater on, In view of the Jump tho Giants, the Dodgers nnd Phillies havo obtained. L F, IC. No, Cobb doesn't grip hla bat with both hands together at the lower end of tho club, Hut hands are aoverat Inches apart and at least three Inches from the end of tho mace ho wields. Western clubs In the American League may look upon the Mackmen as Jokes, but we advise them to reconsider this stand on tho days that Connie decides to work a Mr. nimer Myors. This lanky entry would bo n tough bird to overthrow If work ing with tho Orphan Asylum's third team. Pierce to rfay With Toledo TOI.KDO. O., June 8.
