WF.WS I b ui v - TROUBLE IN IRELAND A ACTOR IN CAUSING UNCERTAINTY IN STOCKS leading Financial Interests Averse to Taking Positive Position in Market Until Text of German Answer Is Received Speculative Buying Absent y, NHW YOUK, April 26. The Inlcrjectlon of new features In the foreign situation tliroURh tho foment' JnR of trouble In Ireland was a factor In causing Increased uncertainty In the speculative situation, especially as It came In conjunction with disappointment over the dividend action on United States Steel common yesterday. The leading financial Interests arc apparently averse to taking nny positive position In the market until the text of tho German answer to our note Is re ceived and full knowtedgo can be obtained of the diplomatic situation. Condi tions have become such that Wall Street is fearful about trading on 'uncer tainties and would sooner know the worst and buy stocks on what In other times would bo considered unfavorable developments than make Ioiir commitments 'With tho International situation shrouded In doubt. Norfolk and Western was a strong Issue, ndvanclnB 24 on the belief that the dividend would bo Increased. Indications are that Norfolk and "Western in tho current fiscal year to end June 30 next will earn approximately 1G per cent, on tho $113,868,400 common stock now outstanding. This would compare with 8.7 per cent, on $108,150,000 common In tho 1915 year. Absence of speculative buying In the general list was naturally followed by the new bear pressure and nearly all tho Important Issues joined In a down ward movement In tho early forenoon, with pronounced weakness displayed In both Baldwin Locomotive and Crucible Steel. A good part of the selling of Baldwin Locomotive wns by C. D. Barney & Co. nnd Theodore Wolf, supposed to represent Philadelphia Interests. . It has been a matter of current gossip for some days that riillndolphla Is In tho market again to accumulate Baldwin Locomotive for some special pur--pose, nnd today's open selling by Philadelphia, representatives may havo been part of a plan to facltltnto theso purchases. It Is possible, nlthough there ha been no Intimation of such intention, that the plan for forming n new Industrial consolidation to Include Baldwin Loco motive Is again under consideration. Tho advance In tho Distillers Securities, on which that stock rose to above 60, was based on statements coming from the management that bctatcd action on tho dividend will be taken on Mny 18, nnd It Is insisted that the stock will then be put on n 6 per cent, basis. Uist March tho company announced that dividend action had been postponed until Mny. While the speculative clement on tho Street, which had looked for nn Increased distribution on United States Steel common, was disappointed when only the regular dividend wns declared at tho directors' meeting yesterday, there was no disturbance of actual holdings this morning, nnd after tho Initial loss tho price quickly came back to near yesterday's final figures. It Is thought in some Important circles that the banking interests identified with the manage ment of the United States Steel common havo In view tho placing of that stock In the investment class and removing It entirely from tho speculative field, and that It was with this view In mind that It was decided not to make any Increased distribution on tho stock. Foreign Interests Insist thnt the importance of the uprising In Ireland may bo measured by the fact that consols declined only 1-16 this morning. O'Bannon Corporation Declares 25 Extra Dividend BOSTON, April 26. The O'Bannon Corporation declared a dividend of 1 per cent, on tho common stock, establishing n regular S per cent, rate: also, an extra dividend of 25 per cent. In cash, payable April 27 to stock of record April 25. E. V. R. Thayer and J. J. Trocter, Jr., were elected directors of the corporation. It was believed that tho poor outlook for the crops would dominate prices. The weather In the spring wheat belt was un settled and cool. May opened at $1.13 to $1.13, and sold up to $1.14 against $1.13 at the end yesterday; July started at $1.14 to $1.14, and advanced to $1.14. com pared with $1.14 at the. close yesterday, and September started at, $1.13 to $1.13 and rose to $1.14, contrasted with Jl.llVi, yesterday's last price. There were recessions from the top be fore the end of, tho first half hour. The market at Liverpool was easy. The be lief prevailed there that shipments from Canada would be begun shortly and that, with Argentina, Australia and India com peting, arrivals In the United Kingdom would be large. The receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth today were 184 cars against 126 cars a year ago ; at Chicago, 119 cars, compared with 176 cars last years; at Winnipeg, 164 cars, contrasted with 133 cars a year ago. Com was steady, but quiet The mar ket at Uverpopol was nominal. It was believed that the recent official estimate putting the yield In Argentina at 160,000,. 000 bushels was too large. That coun try's exportable surplus Is now estimated at 90,000,000 to 100,000.000 bushels with Oie quality lowered. The receipts here today were 157 cars. Price changes In oats were slight, The receipts here today were 16S cars. Leading futures ranied aa follows; inosyi Open. High. Brill Stock Falls 41 Points to the Lowest Price, at Which It Has Sold This Year Despite talk of a cessation In tlio pur chases of steel for foreign account It can bo authoritatively Btatcd that there Is moro export business pending at present than at any tlmo since the beginning of the war In Europe. Tlio demand for steel for munitions con tinues enormous, but It Is not believed pos sible that tho steel companies In this coun try will bo able lo supply as much of this material next year ns they havo thus far, duo to tho fact that the largo domestlo demand, especially from tho railroads, will take up a considerable part of tho plant capacity. Therefore, whlto the shipments In the future probably will not bo ns largo as some made heretofore. It will not ho be cause the orders nro not to be obtained, but simply because the steel companies will be unable to fill them. Orders for steel, required for seven new steamships, havoMieen placed with the United States Steel Corporation. Of theso sevno vessels, which were ordered recent ly In this country, threo are for Norwegian account. Kach ship will Inko more than 2300 tons of steel, so thnt this business nnimints to approximately 16,100 tond. Delivery of tho steel Is to bo made dur ing tho second half of 1917, and accord ing to tho best Information obtainable the plates wero sold nt 2.00c a pound nnd the shapes nt 2.60c. a pound. A feature of the ship orders being placed In this country at present Is that tho buyer Is financing the construction of tho boats. Thlsls nu entirely new de parture, ns heretofore tho shipbuilding companies In this country and In Europe, ns welt, had to carry on the financing for tho buyer. v 1'rlco movements were Irregular on the Philadelphia Stock Kxchango today. Trad. Ing was quiet, the Increased activity of yesterday not being carried over night. The most activity was In Tonopah Bel mont, more than 1700 shares of that slock changing hands before noon, the price being unchanged. Weakness of J. O. On tho other hand Kentucky Se curities Corporation preferred rose a full point to 76, tho highest It has sold this yenr. Cramp Shipbuilding showed a loss of a point on tho first transaction. It was said that tho earnings of the compnny for this year, which ends this month, would be about Jt, 000.000. This Is nn Increase ot ILOBO.OOO over the previous year.
