VIGOROUS BUYING IN STOCKS;
ORDERS WERE HARD TO EXECUTE
Offerings Scant Cuban-American Sugar Up 18 and In
dustrial Alcohol More Than 16 Points Urgent
Efforts to Buy Back Issues Put Out Yesterday
NEW YORK, Keb. 1.
Another change from clouds io sunshine was recorded In Wall street In
today's trailing, tnstend of stocks being; offered at concessions by both nggroa-
stvo benrs nml weakened bulls thcro wns vigorous buying1 from tho start, with
offerings 'scant, mnklng buying orders hard to execute, except at brisk advances
in prices.
Tho prlco movements Included an advance of 18 points in Cuban American
Sugar Refining nnd over If! points In Industrial Alcohol, while Uethlohcm Steel
followed with a gain of 15 points to 46S on n few transactions. In the rest of
tho list buying orders camo from various sources with tho leading railroads
and Industrials making gains of around 2 points and with theso upturns oven
tho President's speeches were regarded as bullish factors.
Probably most Important as a moving forco wns found In the Penn
sylvania Railroad's statement for tho month of December, but In addition
tc that tho list of dividend declarations for tho day, Including tho Initial
dividend on Kcnnccott Copper, tho extra dividend on Studebaker and tho
distribution on Amorlcnn Cotton Oil. Following the resumption of dividend
on I'nltcd States Steel common a week ngo, and tho Increased dividend on
St. Paul last Thursdny contributed to restoro confidence and Induce vigorous
buying.
It wns expected thnt tho Now York Central statement for thu month ot
December would be Issued today, but It will bo deferred for a few days, as
it will complete tho entire, fiscal year, and It Is necessary to gather In many
detailed Hems so that the total will conform to tho showing to bo mado In
tho full annual report when that document Is issued. -
Tho earnings referred to and tho dividend declarations proved hard for
bear assertions to offset, and a feature of the day's market was urgent efforts
to buy back some of the largo lines of stock put out nt low levels when
the market was under pronounced pressure yesterday.
