HEAVY DEMAND FOR RAILROAD
SHARES SENT PRICES UPWARD
War Specialties Were Relegated to the Background as
Speculators Showed Renewed Interest
in the Standard Issues
NEW YOUK. Oct. 9.
There was a bit; demnnd for tho rnllroml shnreB nt tho opening of the
stock mnrkct today, nnd they became strong; nnd nctlve. Tho speculators
were In the market In Inrne numbers, and their Inquiries for the rnll wore
heavy. Tho wnr specialties, which hnvo been nttrnctlnc; tho major part of
the Interest for qulto a while now. were of secondary Importance, although
several of this group moved higher In the short susslon.
Tho stocks of the Western roads showed tho grentest strength, several
of them moving up over n point. They were helped by tho belief that tho
advance freight rnto case will be reopened by the Interstate Commerce Com
mission, nnd tho opinion Is that tho carriers stand a good chance of coming
out with a greater dogreo of success than In tho previous hearings. Wltfi the
success of the big Anglo-French loan tho danger of foreign liquidation, wlilctf
has been heavy In this class of securities. Is now removed. Then, too, tho
earnings are showing up much better than they hnvo been and the Income
yields and going market prices are very good. The copper stocks were also
strong, but not to such an extent ns the rails. Liberal realzllng was met at
the higher levels nnd prices went off. the llsl becoming Irregular. Sales
were well taken and before the end strength was again shown. Reading
touched a new high record for this year during the early part of the session.
The largest advance made by any of tho war stocks was Bethlehem Steel
which rose five points.
The financial position of the United States now Is, Indeed, an enviable
one. Reports received from day to day of tho business conditions are most
encouraging, and bearing this out Is the tremendous Increase In the bank
clearings which nro reported from week to week. During tho Inst six days
for Instance, there was an increase of more than 69 per cent., as compared
with the same period of last year, all of the cities reporting a larger amount
of business through the clearing houses. Wo are assured of banner crops
and there Is a plentiful supply of money.
Railroad Earnings Showing Up Belter
Earnings of the railroads of the country appear to have at last turned
the corner for the better. Twenty-one roods, for Instance, report gross
!'n,f f 2,053,96( " the urth week of September, an increase of
1480,413 over tho same period of last year.
'
$84,500,000 Industrial Securities Mature Next Year
Compilations just completed show that there are only $84,500,000 of in
dustrial securities which are outstanding that mature next year. During the
last year there were $153,000,000. or nearly twice as many. Of tho maturities
next year none is larger than $4,600,000. nnd there are only four which
reach the $3,000,000 mark. y r wmcn

Spring receipts are Improving, with ship

of the bulls wbb the report that acreage
for the new winter crop will be fully 10

The Increased movement from the farms
Is taken as an Indication that farmers
arc not going to wait longer to secure a
higher price.
Corn and oats wero steady, with busi

bushels of Manltobns. It Is Bald that
many sales for foreign deliveries are
being withheld, as 11,000,000 bushels of
wheat left American ports this week.
Sales of 1,000.000 bushels of corn for ex
port are snld to have been made In the
prct few days. Chicago ensh handlers
sold 16,000 bushels of wheat, 100.000 bush

domestic, for seaboard delivery.

nnd stocks of merchandise are small,
while lastly, but by no means least, the
attitude of tho Government toward cor

decided chance for the better.
There aro two offsets to the favorable

aro serious. One, the tariff, has not
so Krent a bearing at present, on account
of tho war, but the flnnnclal world has
not forgotten the depression prior to hos
tilities, when the Democratic party came
Into power. The other unfavorable fac
tor has not yet developed fully, but Is
evidently on the Increase, and that Is
labor trouble. This unrest Is dally grow

anthracite trade Is looking ahead nnd

of tho present agreement, with the, miners,
and elsewhere agitators nre at work.
