Tho speculators were In the market In Inrne numbers, and their Inquiries for the rnll wore heavy. Tho wnr specialties, which hnvo been nttrnctlnc; tho major part of the Interest for qulto a while now. were of secondary Importance, although several of this group moved higher In the short susslon. Tho stocks of the Western roads showed tho grentest strength, several of them moving up over n point. They were helped by tho belief that tho advance freight rnto case will be reopened by the Interstate Commerce Com mission, nnd tho opinion Is that tho carriers stand a good chance of coming out with a greater dogreo of success than In tho previous hearings. Wltfi the success of the big Anglo-French loan tho danger of foreign liquidation, wlilctf has been heavy In this class of securities. Is now removed. Then, too, tho earnings are showing up much better than they hnvo been and the Income yields and going market prices are very good. The copper stocks were also strong, but not to such an extent ns the rails. Liberal realzllng was met at the higher levels nnd prices went off. the llsl becoming Irregular. Sales were well taken and before the end strength was again shown. Reading touched a new high record for this year during the early part of the session. The largest advance made by any of tho war stocks was Bethlehem Steel which rose five points. The financial position of the United States now Is, Indeed, an enviable one. One, the tariff, has not so Krent a bearing at present, on account of tho war, but the flnnnclal world has not forgotten the depression prior to hos tilities, when the Democratic party came Into power. The other unfavorable fac tor has not yet developed fully, but Is evidently on the Increase, and that Is labor trouble. This unrest Is dally grow ing as business prosperity returns. The anthracite trade Is looking ahead nnd alrendy storing coal, pending the end of tho present agreement, with the, miners, and elsewhere agitators nre at work. Meantime stocks continue to climb.
