time. It wftS prepared for something un
otual. and, with one exception, It got It

move of the GrlflUh-Ince'Sennctt forces,
generated by II. E. Altken, has been mas
terly, from advertising campaigns to the
tedecoratlon of theatres. Philadelphia

thing was a pleasant neutral gray, except

The Triangle plan of presenting dramatic stars of the
first magnitude in plays of the highest quality has proved a
huge success.
If you were not at the Chestnut Street Opera House
last night 'you -surely will be tonight, tomorrow night or ,
some night this week.
It was said that Philadelphia would not pay Two Dol
lars for this form of entertainment. That question has now
been definitely settled.

Superintendent of Police Robinson an
nounced today tho transfer of Mounted
Patrolmen William J. Spioul and William
C. Lee, from the C5th street and Wood
land acnue station, to foot duty at the
32d -street and Woodland avenue station;
Patrolmnn Benjamin Schurr, from Front
nnd Master streets station, to 65th street
and Woodland acnuo station, and Patrol
man Peter J. Hamilton, from NIcctown
station, to Ridge nnd Mldvale avenues
station.
Stricken While Pushing Milk Cart
Tho strain of lifting a pushcart over
a curb at Park avenue nnd Rush streets
today proved fatal to William Puff, CO
years old, of 132S Seltzer street. Puff
who wns a milk dealer,, delivered his
goods In a pushcart. While trying to
get It over tho curb, he was stricken
with heart disease and collapsed. Three
policemen of the Park and Lehigh ave
nues station found him and carried him
to his home where he wds pronounced
dead by a physician.

SPECTACULAR OIL BLAZE

Buildings of Atlantic Refining
Company Endangered by
Blazo on Premises
Nearly 1000 gallons of crude oil were
burned today when fire of unknown origin
destroyed an Iron still In the plant of
tho Atlantic Refining Company, at Point
Dreese. At first the company's private
fire department sought to battle with the
blaze, but when the flames' reached a
100-foot height, endangering the other
buildings, an alarm was sent summoning
tho city's engines. Heavy clouds of
black, suffocating smoke enveloped tho
firefighters and made their work peril
ous. Thousands of persons wero drawn to
the spectacular blaze, the heat of which
kept them well back. After raging a
half hour tho flro practlcUly burnt Itself
out and was easily extinguished. Tho loss
Is unknown.

chinery was used, with 117,600 additional
on each craft If they wcro delivered at
tho Mare Island Navy rard at San
Francisco.

offered to build one destroyer for S73,SOO.
with J15.000 additional If delivered at the
Mare Island Navy Yard.
Tho Union Iron Works, at San Fran
cisco, offered to build one destroyer for
Tho Seattle Construction and Drydock
Company's bids called for one destroyer
at JSS5.000 or two at JS70.O0O each.
Other bidders were the Fore River
Shipbuilding Company at Quincy. Mass.,
and the Newport News Shipbuilding
Company at Newport News, Va.
The Navy Department advertised for
bids on six destroyers not to cost more
than 1925,000 each.

her summer homo at Chelsea was cabled

Edward C. Kaltenbach, assistant post
master at Itoyersford, Pa , has been held
In 11000 ball for court following his arrest
yesterday, when an examination of his
books Indicated a shortage of nbout HBO.
According to the postal Inspectors, Kalt
enbach admits he took tho funds.
Kaltenbach, who Is 23 years old, was
married recently. He entered the servlco
of tho Government about 10 years ago
as a messenger. About two years ago
ho as appointed assistant postmaster at
Itoyersford. His salary was $1100. When
reports of tho shortage reached the post
office here Postal Inspector John D. Ker
nnn as sent to Itoyersford and exam
ined the accused man's accounts. Deputy
Marshal W. E. Amsler arrested Kalten
bach when the shortago was discovered.
He was arraigned before United States
Commissioner Long.
Grounded Steamship Refloated
LIVERPOOL, Oct. 6. The British
steamship Manchester Spinner, en route
from Philadelphia to Manchester, which
went ashore on Ptucktngton banks yes
terday, was refloated today.
