on the decline.
As already stated, Lako Superior as
sumed a lending position In tho trading at
tho start ftcr having lain dormant for
some time. War orders were, ns usual,
thn stimulating Influence, nnd the stock
advanced easily, crossing 11, the highest
quotation In a long while. Some 7000
shares changed hands by, 2 o'clock, tho
buying being partly for foreign account.
The day's total sales wero nbout 10,000
shares. It was said tho. Canadian Gov
ernment might help to finance extensions
to tho company's plants for tho purpose
of making war material.
Cambria Steel continued active but
erratic and did not succeed In surprnsslng
yesterday's ' top figure. The Street Is
busy figuring out what la going to hap
pen to the company If, ns Is believed by
mnny, tho Frlck-Donncr option has been
exercised and the stock Is no longer
subject to 1'ennBylvanln llallroad control.
Steel men of stnndlng nssert that the
possibilities of Cnmbrln's development
nre almost unlimited. Pennsylvania
Steel preferred moved up fractionally.
It became known to-day1 that the Au
gust production of tho Pennsylvania
Steel Company's merchant mill depart
ment broke all records for a single
month. The mills are operating at capac
ity, and It Is expected the September
production will oven eclipse the August
figures.
Another strong-spot during the morning
was Electric Storage Battery, concerning
which Eomo very optimistic' talk was
heard. Demand for Philadelphia Electric
was persistent and a considerable amount
of stock was absorbed at 23. Rapid Tran
sit, too, was active and Arm, and so was
United Gas Improvement, as well as
Philadelphia Company. The latter was
aided by encouraging estimates of
earnings of the United Railway Invest
ment Company. An Income account has
been prepared for the year ending March
31, 1916, based on actual earnings to
date, which shows that from the equity
In the Philadelphia company and Its sub
ordinates, etc., the United Railways In
vestment would earn more than 6 Per
cent, on Its stock for the year, compared
with 2.2 per cent, last year. This does
not take Into account the nnnual sur
plus of the United Railroads of San
Francisco.
With regard to tho recent outburst of
activity In Electric Storage Battery
shares it Is worthy of note that electrical
companies report the demand for many
classes of batteries In, this country Is
greater than at any time In years, owing
to the war. Inquiries are particularly
heavy for batteries for auto truck Igni
tion and starting purposes as well as for
wireless and field signal stations and
searchlights.

vance of three points In the cotton market this
morning there waa some heavy selling, nottiily
by uptown and Wall street long Interests,
which eventually depressed the list a couple of
points under last nlght'a close. The reaction
waa checked, however, by bullish spot and
crop newa from both the eastern and western
belt. At the end of the first 15 minutes prices
were back again to the best and about three
points over last nlght'a close.
The gain was not maintained, however, and

LOCAL BUSINESS
IS LITTLE CHANTO
Steel Mills Are Well Supply
With Orders General Out
look Good
Vlrtuolly no chango Is reported In ths
local cotton and cotton yarn trade for
the last week, say II. Q. Dun & Co., In
their weekly review. Business was some-
what less active than previous week,,
owlnjr to the holiday. Most dealers and
manufacturers report business ns gro6
as could be expected at this time, nnd It
Is the Impression that conditions are
gradually Rrowlng better. A good fall
trade Is anticipated. Prices do not show
any radical change, although there hwr
been a slight gradual change In cotton
yarn.
The local wool market remalhajn about ,
tho same condition as for several weeks
past. Manufacturers are buying In fair
amounts to satisfy current requirements,
but do not appear to bo inclined to buy
ahead. Prlres nro firm and aoma dealer
are holding their Block above current
quotations.
The market In Iron and steel presents
no material change, domestic business has
not shown the same activity as foreign
buying, but there Is rccordod Borne Im
provement In that line, and prices aro
stated to be showing an upward tendency.
Mills are well-suppllcd with orders, but
scarcity of labor Is beginning to be tv
factor In tho situation. Pig Iron Is mor
active, as also finished material.
Conditions In tho hnrdwnre line during
the last wee have been quiet Prices
have, however, remained Arm, and those
consulted are under the Impression that
tho outlook for future business Is good,
It Is reported that the quietness of busi
ness at this time Is due largely to general
conditions.
The leather market Is firm and steady,
prices range high for better qualities;
and there Is a good demand, there being
a fairly nctlve market for less desirable
grades. Glazed kid dealers report Bales
above normal and a fairly good demand
In all grades, shoe dealers report an
actlvo trade In certain special stvlcs for
women, nnd a good trade In children's
shoes. Sales for fall season are mod
erate and collections aro fair. Millinery
dealers report a greater demand for trim
ming, and while there Is a tendency to
buy in small quantities there Is an Indi
cation that stocks, are low.
General conditions In the building and
contracting lines are Improving, and the
loss In the volume or business cpe-
rlcnced the first six months of this
year Is being mado up by considerable
operation building, as well ns a decided
increaso In general contracts, including
mills, factories, office buildings and sub
stantial Improvements, and general con
tractors nre fairly busy In their estimat
ing rooms. The present indications; are
that the) balance of the year will show
gains in amount of new work started
that will more than offset the loss shown
the last year.
