New York Bond Sales After rullne atronir throdKhout moat of tho dny, local stockn rencted nil around i when prlres befcnn to weaken In Wall street thin nfternoon. Electric StoraK Bntterr, whtoh had been a firm feature, fell back nearly 2 points below Thum- j ilnv'a clnalner nnotntion. nnd Cambria Steel, another strong spot durlnc tho mornlnB, also' lost about n point. United States Steol fell back sharply, nnd even Lake Superior, which had been a. leader on the upswing at tho outset, had tin advance cut In half. Offerlnirs In most of these Issues were not notably larse on the decline. As already stated, Lako Superior as sumed a lending position In tho trading at tho start ftcr having lain dormant for some time. War orders were, ns usual, thn stimulating Influence, nnd the stock advanced easily, crossing 11, the highest quotation In a long while. Some 7000 shares changed hands by, 2 o'clock, tho buying being partly for foreign account. The day's total sales wero nbout 10,000 shares. It was said tho. Canadian Gov ernment might help to finance extensions to tho company's plants for tho purpose of making war material. Cambria Steel continued active but erratic and did not succeed In surprnsslng yesterday's ' top figure. The Street Is busy figuring out what la going to hap pen to the company If, ns Is believed by mnny, tho Frlck-Donncr option has been exercised and the stock Is no longer subject to 1'ennBylvanln llallroad control. Steel men of stnndlng nssert that the possibilities of Cnmbrln's development nre almost unlimited. Pennsylvania Steel preferred moved up fractionally. It became known to-day1 that the Au gust production of tho Pennsylvania Steel Company's merchant mill depart ment broke all records for a single month. The mills are operating at capac ity, and It Is expected the September production will oven eclipse the August figures. Another strong-spot during the morning was Electric Storage Battery, concerning which Eomo very optimistic' talk was heard. Demand for Philadelphia Electric was persistent and a considerable amount of stock was absorbed at 23. Rapid Tran sit, too, was active and Arm, and so was United Gas Improvement, as well as Philadelphia Company. The latter was aided by encouraging estimates of earnings of the United Railway Invest ment Company. An Income account has been prepared for the year ending March 31, 1916, based on actual earnings to date, which shows that from the equity In the Philadelphia company and Its sub ordinates, etc., the United Railways In vestment would earn more than 6 Per cent, on Its stock for the year, compared with 2.2 per cent, last year. This does not take Into account the nnnual sur plus of the United Railroads of San Francisco. With regard to tho recent outburst of activity In Electric Storage Battery shares it Is worthy of note that electrical companies report the demand for many classes of batteries In, this country Is greater than at any time In years, owing to the war. Inquiries are particularly heavy for batteries for auto truck Igni tion and starting purposes as well as for wireless and field signal stations and searchlights.
