Mr Kirk had a premonition that some
ttng had happened to her husband last
night A relative living' In the Kirk horns
was called to a nearbv telephone and In
formed of Kirk's death. The relative de
cided not to tell Mrs. Kirk until later,
tearing the effect of tho shock tho news
would bring. Mrs. Kirk asked what tho
taeasage said and from whom It came.
When the relative tried to convey the
teertsslon It was only a local call from
a frlertd. Mrs. Kirk cried out:

Large Proportion of Children in Rela

Out of 112 children. Ices than 2 years of
age who died in this city during the last
week 62 succumbed to "summer corn
plant" despite the fact that the weather
for tho period was exceptionally cool.
Tho total "number of deaths recorded
during tho -week was 372. Of this num
ber 228 were adults and 144 were chil
dren, 193 were men, 179 women, 71 boys
and 73 girls.
This figure Is lower than any recorded
for any previous, week this year, and Is
45 lower than the similar period of last
year and 6S lower than that of last week.
The causes of death as listed by the
Bureau of Health, are as follows:

Harry Murphy, 37 years old, of 2234 Fon
taln street, attached to the 19th and
South streets engine company, was badly
cut about the face and body by flynff
glass, and was removed to tho Hahne
mann Hospital.
Frank Doyle, of the insurance patrol,
was overcome by smoke while trying to
lead two frightened horses from the yard
of the burned bulldlnir, but was revived
by comrades, who applied flrst-ald meas
ures. Battalion Chief Barrett was badly
scalded with steam while directing his
men. bulj refused to so to a hospital until
the fire was unde?; control.
During "the excitement, which drew
hundreds of spectators to Broad and
"Wood streets. Charles Menger, 13 years
old, of 94S Wilder street, trying to get
within sight of tho burning building, was
run over by an automobile owned by B.
F. John., at Broad and Callowhlll streets.
He waa taken to the Hahnemann Hos
Pltalr badly cut and bruised about the
legs and body.

ginning the first day's exercises at Camp
Broomall today the members of the
Fenclbles Battalion were ..assembled in
front of headquarters and addressed by
"Major Thomas. Si Lanard, tho command
ing olllcer. The major talked to his men
on the duties of a soldier, and told what
would be expected of them during their
stay in camp.
He reviewed the history of tho Fenclbles
since 1812, pointing out the wars and riots
in which the organization had partici
pated. He then referred to tho trolley
strike of 1910, and declared that at that
time the Fenclbles had been called out by
Director Clay for the sole purpose of dis
crediting the citizen-soldiers. He said
tho reports circulated that articles ot,
equipment had.been taken from the Fencl
bles by the mob were absolutely false And
groundless
Ho then reiterated his offer to award
$1000 to any person who could produce
such an article of equipment with the
exception of about six hats that were
lost while proceeding to the scene of
duty In automobiles.

Va., by Miss Mae Itussell. 130G Vino
street, this city, are stranded in Rich
mond, according to dispatches received
today. Walter Baker and Ravle Troy,
male members of the troupe, have em
ployed an attorney to enter suit against
R. I.. Welsh, manager of the Strand,
accusing him of breach of contract. Ac
cording to the dispatch, Welsh offered
the managers of the troupe $225 to call
off their act, after they had played for
three days to small audiences This was
refused as the contract called for 3350
for the week.

CHICAGO, Sept. 4. Arrangements for
the convention of tho National Friends of
Peaco Society were completed today, and
those In charge of the gathering predicted
that tho convention will "sound a note
against war that will go ringing around
the world." Tho opening session of tho
convention will be held tomorrow after
noon In Mcdlnah Temple. Mrs. William
It. Shepherd, wife of a professor of Co
lumbia University, will preside. Women
will play important parts In tho conven
