It was a day of active trading and
rapid fluctuations on the local exchange.
Many Issues suffered sharp set-backs dur
ing the morning, but In the afternoon
prices rallied nil around under the lend ot
United Statts Steel which had previously
been heavily sold. That a considerable
part of this1 selling was for short account
becamo evident when the recovery set In
and coverlnt; v. as found to be dlnictilt.
Cambria rallied In sympathy.
A number of wiaK fcuom developed in
tho early dealings, but the only stock
to show real prcaure was United States
Steel, In which the selling was heavy

12,000 shares changed hnnds before midday.
Tho day's total Steel sales were 19,200.
Ualdwln Locomotive broke six points,
but only somo TOO shares came out In the
process, and It recovered part of the
loss later. United Qas Improvement
and KeyBtone Telephone preferred wero
down a point or moro, nnd fractional
recessions were lcgtstered In Lake Su
perior, ncndlng. Philadelphia Electric. Le
high Va ley, tho tractions and Cnmbiia
Steel. The last named at one time fell
from 62 to below 51, but It rallied
sharply in the nfternoon, closing above
Saturday's final.
Just beforo thu close J. G. Brill opened
with n sale of 100 shares at 4 IVi, com
pared with i'Vt, the last previous quota
tion made some days ago.
A feature of strength was Cramp Ship
building, which moved contrary to the
general trend on the announcement from
Washington of the contemplated enlarge
ment of the Government s naval program.
The company also had received an order,
It was said, for a 10,000-ton tank
steamer from tho Sun Oil Company.
Local brokcrngo houses were crowded
with customers. Some were looking for
bargains, while others were merely watch
ing their already-made commitments.
The response to requests for additional
margins was reported to be very satis
factory. Vhllo steel stocks were moving
downward prices of Iron and steel prod
ucts were advanced. For Instance, tho
American Sheet and Tlnplato Company
advanced Its quotation on blue annealed
No. 10 gauge to $1.10, Pittsburgh, or Jl
a ton above the previous quotations.
Other mills are asking the new price, or
oven higher, for their product. Standard
railroad spikes are being quoted at $1.44,
and indications are prices will be ad
vanced Jl a ton before tho end of this
month. Smaller spikes are commanding
J1.55. Prices ot wire products have been
advanced Jl a ton on plain nails and .
a ton on barbed and painted wire and
other products, excepting galvanized ex
tras, which are reduced $4 a ton. Export
demand for wire continues active.

Russian Naval Victory Brings a Moro
Cheerful Feeling
LONDON, Auir. 23. There was a cheer
ful feeling on the stock exchange today
which was caused by news of the Rus
sian naval victory at Riga. Trading
was fairly brisk and prices firm. Strength
was shown In war loans, the easier dis
counts having a favorable Influence. The
absence of a provision for any Interest
from revenue on the German war loans
made a profound Impression at this
centre. Home rail? fays were steady, but
trading was light. There was a weak
tone to Americans, although losses were
small. Canadian Pacific was dull and
Russian securities showed Btrength.
Argentine rails drooped and mining and
oil Issues displayed Irregular changes.

The bank return Is highly satisfactory,
We may well be pleased that our cur

patriotic exertion by bankers we en
draw $20,000,000 to $30,000,060 for export

Saturday's exchango was little affected
by the Arabic disaster, which Is another
painful exhibition of savagery. The Ger
mans aro evidently smarting under their
appalling losses of life, besides the gen
eral privations Of a war diet under bu
reaucratic control. Their successes In
Russia have been very costly.
Reports published here Indicate a strong
reform movement In Russia, where the
fall of Kovno endangers Riga.
The stock markets are naturally dull.
American bond sales continue, and prob
ably will Increase unless new credits on
your sldo restore exchanges.
It seems possible that somo change In
the blockade policy may accompany the
new cotton contraband arrangement, but
nothing Is known except that the Cabi
net has been deliberating these ques
tions. Experts generally attribute tho recent
steadiness of German exchange to- the
blockade.
Great efforts are expected pext month

BOSTON & MAINE RAILROAD
- - 1 . . - v;,
To the Noteholders of the Boston & Maine Railroad:
Boston, Mass., August 19, 1915,
The holders of notes due September 2, 1915, ai'e asked to extend these notes to March 2, 1916, on the
following terms:
(1) ANY HOLDER OF NOTES MAY EXTEND THE AMOUNT DUE THEREON UNTIL '
MARCH 2, 1916, WITH INTEREST DISCOUNTED AT THE RATE OF 6 PER ANNUM, OR
(2) ANY HOLDER OF NOTES MAY EXTEND B0 OJ THE AMOUNT DUE THEREON
ON THE TERMS STATED ABOVE AND MAY RECEIVE IN EXCHANGE FOR THE RE- r
MAINING 20 FIVE PER CENT. GOLD NOTES OF MAINE RAILWAYS COMPANIES, ,
DUE APRIL 1, 1919, AT PAR FLAT WITH OCTOBER 1, 1915, COUPON ATTACHED, OF
WHICH ONE-HALF WILL BE NOTES CONVERTIBLE AT THE OPTION OF THE
HOLDER PAR FOR PAR, INTO MAINE CENTRAL RAILROAD COMPANY CAPITAL
STOCK UNTIL OCTOBER 1. 1918, AND THE REMAINING ONE-HALF WILL BE NON
CONVERTIBLE. NOTEHOLDERS WILL BE PERMITTED TO INCREASE OR DECREASE
THE PERCENTAGES OF "EXTENDED NOTES" AND OF MAINE RAILWAYS COM
PANIES NOTES SO AS TO OBTAIN EVEN MULTIPLES OF ONE THOUSAND
DOLLARS.
During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1915, by strict economy and with the partial benefit of increased,
passenger and freight rates recently granted the road was able, notwithstanding a decrease in operating
revenue of $1,489,236, to come within about $334,000 of meeting its fixed charges, as against a 'deficit of
$2,044,742 for the previous year. While this improvement does npt remove the necessity of reorganization
it strengthens our belief that if a consolidation with the Leased Lines can be effected on" equitable terms',
a financially strong corporation will result which will be to the greatest advantage of all.
If granted, the extension of your notes now asked for will not i,n any way diminish your security, as
no mortgage can be placed upon the property without securing your notes, and it will enable the manage
ment to continue Its efforts toward a sound reorganization, under favorable conditions. Should hojders of
Boston & Maine Notes who accept Plan No, 2 desire notes of Maine Railways Companies, in excess oi
their allotment of 20 they may be permitted to increase their holding of Maine Railways Companie
Notes and decrease their Boston & Maine Notes accordingly, from any of such notes remaining m tHe
Treasury. In case of applications in excess of the amount of notes available, allotment will be waU $t
far as practicable upon a pro-rata basis. , "" f i
Acceptance of the above offers are to be coustrued as conditional upon action by the Director., jsot ;
later than September 1, 1915, declaring the plan of extension effective.
NOTEHOLDERS ARE REQUESTED TO INFORM THE OLD COLONY TRUiT COM
PANY, 17 COURT STREET, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, BEFORE 2 F,' M., FRIDAY,
