Molla Bjurstedt, of Norway, won the
women's national lawn tennis champion
ship at the Philadelphia Cricket Club
here today, by defeating Mre. George
Wlghtmnn. of Boston, title holdor In 1903,
1910 and lfll, ns Miss Hazel Hotchklss, of
California, by two sets to one. Scores, 4-6,
6-3. 6-0.
This Is the first time In the 20 years
that the event has been held that a for
eigner has captured tho United States
singles championship.
Mrs. Wlghtman completely outplayed
Miss Bjurstedt In the first set, especially
at critical stages. It was very well con
tested, however, the score In games being
6-4, and In points SS to 35.
Mrs. Wlghtman won the first two
games hand running, with such ease that
the spectators, numbering more than
2000 were surprised. Gradually Miss
Bjurstedt found her form, and proved It
by taking the second set by six games to
two.
Mrs. Wlghtman excelled In overhead
strokes, and In the placing of returns
Just over the net, Miss BJurstedt's fore
hand strokes wero handled easily In the
early part of the match, but after the
f.rst set they wero most effective and
whizzed over the net with the speed of a
bullet. In the third set Miss BJurstedt's
continued excellent form brought forth
rounds of applause. Her sideline shots
were always In by an inch or so, and
always found Mrs. Wlghtman flat-footed.
Score, 6-0.
For the first time In the history of the
event the final round for the women's na
tional lawn tennis championship had an
International flavor.
Mrs. Wlghtman won the toss for serv
ice, and elected the choice of courts, giv
ing Miss Bjurstedt, of Norway, the serv
ice. Mrs. Wlghtman, of America, took
tho first game with ease, to love. After
Mrs. Wlghtman led, 30-15 In the second

two easy returns and put another out of

Mrs. Wlghtman put three In a row frtm
the base line out of court, but then stead
led and deuce was called.
Miss Bjurstedt then captured the game,
score 2-1, Mrs, Wlghtman leading,
Miss Bjurstedt seemed to lack the ac
curacy that Is so prominent a feature of
Mrs, Wlghtman's game, and her forehand
strokes lacked their usual Btlng.
Mrs. Wlghtman pulled through with the
fourth game after the Norse girl was
leading, and won It after deuce wag
called.
The fifth game was particularly well
played. Miss Bjurstedt winning and mak
ing the game 3-2. Miss Bjurstedt 'made
several points on her four-hand strokes
In the sixth game, but Mrs. Wlghtman's
all-around generalship eventually won It
for her. Leading In the next, 40-15, Miss
Bjurstedt served a double fault, then put
one out of court from the base line, and
eventually lost, after netting two easy
returns, Mrs, Wlghtman leading, 5-2.
Up to then neither of the players had
tried the net game, but remained con
tinually at the back of court. Playing
her best tennis of the set, so far, Miss
Bjurstedt won the eighth, game to love,
and then won the ninth after some
lengthy rallies. Score, 5-4.
Mrs. Wlghtman leading. Miss Bjur
stedt seemed to be gradually finding her
form and assumed an early lead in the
tenth game. Eventually Mrs, Wlghtman
brought the score to deuce. Advantage
was called la favor of the former Call

aro both in tho final of the mixed doubles,
It was decided to run off the men's
jingles final between Craig Diddle,
Merlon, nnd W. T. Tllden, Jr., German
town, first. Howover, after theso two
had played three sets of a five set match,
with Tllden leading by two sets to one,
nlnv wns halted In that event, and tho
final In mixed doubles was begun. Miss
BJurstedt's partner was Irving C. Wright,
of Boston, nnd Mrs. Wlghtman's was H.
C. Johnson, another Bostonlan.
Mrs. Wlghtman and her partner won
tho first set easily by six games to none.
As a team tho Boston pair looked well
nigh unbeatable. Some excellent rallies
were staged, ono In particular, with all
four players at tho net, being received
with a burst of applause. Johnson dl-.
rooted most of his playing at Miss BJur--stedt
Thus the new national singles
champion was forced to do most of the
work on her side of tho net.
Pretty soon tho match developed Into a
rout. Mrs. Wlghtman and Johnson won
four games In tho socond set beforo Miss
Bjurstedt and Wright registered their
first victory. Miss Bjurstedt played a
high-clans, all-round game, but the com
bined attack of the other pair was a lit
tlo too much for even a. champion. Mrs.
Wlghtman and Johnson quickly took tho
next two games and won set and match.
