George Wlghtmnn. of Boston, title holdor In 1903, 1910 and lfll, ns Miss Hazel Hotchklss, of California, by two sets to one. Scores, 4-6, 6-3. 6-0. This Is the first time In the 20 years that the event has been held that a for eigner has captured tho United States singles championship. Mrs. Wlghtman completely outplayed Miss Bjurstedt In the first set, especially at critical stages. It was very well con tested, however, the score In games being 6-4, and In points SS to 35. Mrs. Wlghtman won the first two games hand running, with such ease that the spectators, numbering more than 2000 were surprised. Gradually Miss Bjurstedt found her form, and proved It by taking the second set by six games to two. Mrs. Wlghtman excelled In overhead strokes, and In the placing of returns Just over the net, Miss BJurstedt's fore hand strokes wero handled easily In the early part of the match, but after the f.rst set they wero most effective and whizzed over the net with the speed of a bullet. In the third set Miss BJurstedt's continued excellent form brought forth rounds of applause. Her sideline shots were always In by an inch or so, and always found Mrs. Wlghtman flat-footed. Score, 6-0. For the first time In the history of the event the final round for the women's na tional lawn tennis championship had an International flavor. After Mrs. Wlghtman led, 30-15 In the second set Miss Bjurstedt brought the score to deuce, then advantage. She then netted two easy returns and put another out of court, Sirs. Wlghtman winning. Miss Bjurstedt winning and mak ing the game 3-2. Miss Bjurstedt 'made several points on her four-hand strokes In the sixth game, but Mrs. Wlghtman's all-around generalship eventually won It for her. Up to then neither of the players had tried the net game, but remained con tinually at the back of court.
